Lawyer and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has revealed that his client, Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has been rushed to the police hospital, raising fresh concerns about his health and access to legal representation.

The development comes just days after the Accra High Court ordered Abu Trica's extradition to the United States over allegations linking him to an $8 million romance scam.

His legal team has since filed applications seeking to halt the extradition, with the High Court scheduled to hear the matter on July 10 after granting an expedited hearing.

Lawyer Raises Concerns Over Client's Welfare

In a social media post on Wednesday, July 8, Barker-Vormawor said he had received information that Abu Trica had been taken to the police hospital.

"I have just found out from sources at the police hospital that Abu Trica has been rushed to the hospital," he wrote.

The lawyer claimed that neither he nor his legal team has been allowed to see or communicate with their client since he was taken into custody following the court's extradition ruling.

"It has been over a week; we haven't been allowed access to Abu Trica as lawyers, and our request to meet him as his lawyers has not been granted," he stated.

Legal Team Threatens Habeas Corpus Action

Barker-Vormawor further alleged that his team has not been informed of Abu Trica's whereabouts, claiming that even INTERPOL officials, who initially had custody of him, indicated they were no longer holding him.

According to the lawyer, the continued denial of access to his client raises serious constitutional concerns.

He warned that his legal team would file a habeas corpus application on Thursday if authorities continued to prevent them from meeting Abu Trica, arguing that access to legal counsel is a fundamental constitutional right guaranteed under Ghanaian law.

The latest development comes as Abu Trica's legal battle against his extradition to the United States continues, with the High Court expected to determine his application to stay the extradition proceedings on July 10.
