Ghanaian music star Black Sherif has opened up about the creative inspiration behind his “PopStar” music video, revealing that global icon Michael Jackson played a major role in shaping its visual direction.

The award-winning artiste, born Mohammed Ismail Sherif Kwaku Frimpong, made the revelation during an interview on Onua TV with Nana Ama McBrown, where he detailed how Jackson’s style has long influenced his artistic expression.

Michael Jackson’s Influence on Black Sherif’s Style

Black Sherif explained that his admiration for Michael Jackson goes beyond music, extending deeply into fashion and performance aesthetics—especially the legend’s iconic outfits and sleeve designs.

According to him, Michael Jackson frequently appears on his personal “mood boards” when crafting looks for performances and visual projects.

“Those who have been on my Snapchat for a long time will know Michael Jackson has been on my mood board. I like his clothes and how the sleeves are… he is always part of my creative process,” he said.

He added that the vibrant energy of the “PopStar” track naturally aligned with a Michael Jackson-inspired theme, making the visual direction an organic creative choice.

Creative Process Behind “PopStar”

The “PopStar” video reflects a blend of global influence and personal storytelling, with Black Sherif emphasising that his artistic process is largely spontaneous.

He noted that inspiration is not tied to a fixed routine or environment, explaining that ideas can come at any moment.

“For me, I believe that the songs float around,” he stated.

He even revealed that his breakout hit Second Sermon was written while walking, highlighting his fluid and instinctive approach to songwriting.

Breaking Creative Norms

Black Sherif also shed light on a unique artistic decision in “PopStar”—starting the song from “November to November” rather than following the traditional calendar sequence.

He explained that this was a deliberate move to reflect his non-conformist mindset and willingness to break conventional rules in music and storytelling.
