Court approves Abu Trica's extradition to U.S

The Gbese District Court has approved a U.S. request to surrender Frederick Kumi, better known as Abu Trica , to face federal charges in the United States over his alleged involvement in a large‑scale online romance scam reportedly worth more than $8 million.
The court’s decision marks a key development in a high‑profile legal battle that has drawn national attention, but Kumi and his legal team have been given 15 days to challenge the ruling before the extradition process formally proceeds.

Kumi, who also goes by the name Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng, was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Northern District of Ohio on charges including wire fraud, money-laundering conspiracy, and related offences. Prosecutors allege the scheme targeted vulnerable victims — mainly elderly Americans — by creating fake online identities and building fraudulent romantic relationships to extract money under false pretences.
The indictment also indicates that the network used sophisticated methods, including artificial intelligence tools to assume false identities and gain victims’ trust, before persuading them to send funds under the guise of emergencies or bogus investment opportunities.
Kumi was originally arrested in Ghana on 11 December 2025 after a joint operation involving Ghanaian law enforcement and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He has been remanded in custody, with legal proceedings in Ghana’s courts unfolding over several months.

Earlier in the case, the court briefly discharged him after charges were withdrawn, but he was re‑arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and has remained in custody as the extradition application moves forward.
If extradited and convicted in the United States, Kumi could face up to 20 years in federal prison, though legal analysts note that indictments are only allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
