The Accra High Court has dismissed an application filed by Ghanaian businessman and socialite Fredrick Kum, popularly known as Abu Trica, removing the last major legal obstacle to his extradition to the United States.

Abu Trica's legal team had filed a certiorari application on 19 May 2026, seeking to overturn an earlier ruling by the Gbese District Court that approved his extradition to face criminal charges in the US.

However, in a ruling delivered on 2 July 2026, the High Court upheld the decision of the lower court, effectively clearing the path for Ghanaian authorities to proceed with his extradition to the United States.

According to reports, the ruling marks a significant development in a long-running legal battle stemming from an extradition request made by the US government.

Abu Trica is wanted by American authorities over allegations of financial crimes, including wire fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors claim he was involved in an alleged romance scam network that reportedly defrauded elderly victims of more than $8 million.

The case has attracted significant public attention in both Ghana and the United States due to the scale of the alleged fraud and the high-profile nature of the accused.

Before the latest ruling, Abu Trica spent several months in custody before securing bail from the Accra High Court on 21 April 2026. The court granted him bail in the sum of GHS 30 million with two justified sureties.

After satisfying the bail conditions, he was released from custody on 15 May 2026 while awaiting the outcome of the legal challenge against his extradition.

Although the Gbese District Court had already authorised his extradition, his lawyers sought to halt the process by filing an appeal at the High Court. The dismissal of that application means the extradition proceedings can now move forward, bringing Ghana one step closer to surrendering him to US authorities for prosecution.

The latest court decision is expected to accelerate efforts by both Ghanaian and American authorities to complete the extradition process and have the case heard in the United States.
