Every Rapperholic, I wasn’t healthy – Sarkodie opens up

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has opened up about how he balances his health and music during the festive season, admitting that while his passion for music keeps him active on stage, he needs to pay more attention to his health.
During a discussion on Hitz FM, the award-winning rapper said his passion for music gives him the energy to perform, even when the schedule is tight. According to him, loving what he does makes the workload feel lighter.
“It’s the love for it, you know. When you love something, you don’t even feel like you might not even be the most physical person, but when you love something, you will have the energy for it. I love to perform. I love to make music, so anything music-related,” he said.
Sarkodie explained that many of the shows he appears on are hosted by people he respects and enjoys working with, which makes it difficult for him to turn down invitations. He said performing on such platforms is always an honour.
“Of course, the people that I jumped on their platforms, these are my people. It’s an honour to share the stage with them, so I couldn’t say no. I enjoy being on stage,” he mentioned.
Touching on his health, Sarkodie clarified that he does go for medical check-ups but admitted he has not been consistent. He said this is something he needs to improve on, especially with the stress that comes with music and performances.
“I’m not going to lie like I’m on top of it 24/7, but I have to get better. Once in a while I go check, but I think it has to be consistent.”
He also reflected on past Rapperholic concerts, noting that although fans enjoyed the shows, he was often dealing with stress and exhaustion behind the scenes.
“Funny enough, every Rapperholic – I don’t think there was a year that I was okay; all the Rapperholics that they’ve experienced, I wasn’t healthy,” he said.
Sarkodie further revealed that last year, stress forced him to slow down and cancel several shows, which led to refunds.

“Last year I had to refund a lot of shows because I shut down.”
Using his experience as advice to himself and other musicians, Sarkodie stressed the need to take health seriously, especially in a demanding industry like music.
“I need to get on it seriously; it’s very important to check on our health.”
His comments highlight the pressure artistes face during busy seasons and serve as a reminder that managing stress and maintaining regular health check-ups are key to long-term success in music.
