Ghanaian businessman and socialite Frederick Kumi, widely known by his alias Abu Trica, has been extradited to the United States to answer to criminal charges, bringing months of legal wrangling to a close.

According to JoyNews, Kumi departed Ghana on Thursday morning aboard Delta Airlines flight DL157, with sources confirming his transfer marks the conclusion of his prolonged fight against a US extradition request.

The move comes just days after his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, revealed that Kumi had reportedly been taken to the Police Hospital in Accra, raising concerns at the time about restricted access to his client. Barker-Vormawor had claimed the defence team was blocked from meeting Kumi for over a week and was left uncertain of his whereabouts as authorities finalised extradition arrangements.

The Allegations Against Him

Kumi is wanted in the US in connection with an alleged romance scam operation that targeted elderly victims. Prosecutors allege the scheme relied on artificial intelligence tools to fabricate identities and build online relationships with victims, who were then allegedly deceived into handing over money. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

He was first arrested in Ghana on December 11, 2025, in a joint operation between Ghanaian security agencies and the FBI. He was subsequently granted bail of GH¢30 million with two sureties while his legal team challenged the extradition proceedings.

Court Battle Reaches a Head

The legal fight escalated after the Accra High Court, on July 2, 2026, threw out an application from Kumi's lawyers seeking to overturn the Gbese District Court's earlier approval of the US extradition request. Following that ruling, security officials rearrested Kumi to proceed with his transfer to American custody.

Reacting to the court's decision, Barker-Vormawor said he was abroad when he learned the case had been resolved. In a Facebook post, he wrote:

"I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has fast-tracked, his extraditionfast-tracked hisbu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court."

His defence team went on to file an emergency application on July 3, 2026, seeking to halt the extradition, arguing the process had been rushed without proper notice. That application, however, did not stop authorities from carrying out the transfer.

Part of a Broader US Crackdown on Cybercrime

Kumi's case fits into a wider pattern of US efforts to prosecute individuals linked to international cybercrime and romance fraud networks. Other Ghanaians who have faced similar action include Joseph Badu Boateng, known as Dada Joe Remix, extradited over alleged fraud offences, and musician Mona Faiz Montrage, known as Hajia4Reall, who was extradited from the United Kingdom in 2023 and later pleaded guilty in a US court.

Separate Human Rights Lawsuit Still Pending

Alongside the extradition case, Kumi's legal team has filed a separate human rights lawsuit alleging mistreatment during his arrest. The suit names several institutions, including the Narcotics Control Commission, the Economic and Organised Crime Office, the Attorney-General's Department, and the FBI, accusing them of violating his rights. How his extradition will affect the progress of that separate case remains unclear.
