Veteran Kumawood actor Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi dies after battle with kidney disease

Ghana's film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Kumawood actor and film director Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi, who passed away after a prolonged battle with kidney disease.

News of his passing was confirmed by Akoma FM on Saturday, July 18, 2026, bringing an end to months of public concern over his deteriorating health.

Before his death, Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi had been diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease and was undergoing regular dialysis while awaiting a kidney transplant.

His worsening condition prompted an urgent public fundraising campaign after it emerged that more than GH¢700,000 was required to cover the cost of the transplant, dialysis, medication and post-operative care.

The appeal attracted widespread support from colleagues, fans and well-wishers across Ghana's entertainment industry, many of whom contributed towards his medical expenses.

One of the earliest public supporters was celebrated Kumawood actress Mercy Asiedu, who visited the veteran actor and donated GH¢50,000 to support his treatment.

She also called on actors, filmmakers, producers and members of the public to contribute financially in the hope of helping him undergo the life-saving kidney transplant.

Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi was widely admired for his outstanding contribution to Ghana's Twi-language film industry, where he established himself as both a talented actor and accomplished film director.

Throughout his career, he featured in numerous Kumawood productions and earned the admiration of audiences and colleagues for his dedication to Ghanaian cinema.

His passing marks another significant loss for the Kumawood movie industry, with tributes expected to pour in from fellow actors, filmmakers, fans and loved ones as they honour his legacy and contributions to Ghana's entertainment sector.
