A collision between a fuel tanker and a tipper truck near the underbridge on the Accra-Tema Motorway has left one person dead and three others seriously injured after the crash triggered a massive fire.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) deployed three fire tenders to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby vehicles and surrounding infrastructure. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control, though operations remain ongoing.

One person perished in the inferno, burnt beyond recognition, while three others sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Speaking on the incident, GNFS Public Relations Officer ADO Alex King Nartey confirmed the fire had been neutralised but warned that residual fuel in the tanker was complicating efforts to clear the scene.

"With the fuel tanker, it was well engulfed with fire, and we were able to neutralise the fire. Unfortunately, there is some petrol in the tanker. We are arranging for an empty tanker to offload the content of the tanker onto that one, and once it's done, we will be able to pull the tanker away from the road," ADO Nartey said.

The cause of the collision has not yet been established. Emergency personnel remain on-site as authorities work to safely offload the remaining fuel before the tanker can be removed from the road.

Motorists are advised to avoid the stretch of the Accra-Tema Motorway near the underbridge until the scene is fully cleared and to use alternative routes where possible.
