Every country’s name tells a story. Across Africa, some nations are named after influential figures whose legacies have endured for centuries—from Arab traders and European royals to powerful African kings. Here are five African countries named after real people and the fascinating histories behind them.

1. Mozambique

Named After: Mussa Bin Bique (Mussa Ibn Malik)

Mozambique derives its name from Mussa Bin Bique, a prominent Arab trader and Islamic leader encountered by Portuguese explorers along the East African coast. His authority and influence were so significant that the Portuguese adopted his name for the island, which later extended to the entire country.

Today, Mozambique stands as a nation of over 33 million people, with a name that reflects centuries of trade, culture, and historical interaction.

Mauritius was named in 1598 by Dutch explorers in honour of Prince Maurice van Nassau, a key military leader in the Dutch Republic. Interestingly, he never visited the island.

Over time, the island passed through French and British control, but its original name was restored in 1814—and remains unchanged today.

3. Eswatini

Eswatini means “land of the Swazis", a people named after King Mswati II. He is celebrated as one of the most powerful rulers in the nation’s history, expanding and unifying the kingdom during his reign.

In 2018, the country officially changed its name from Swaziland to Eswatini, reclaiming its indigenous identity.

Seychelles is named after Jean Moreau de Séchelles, France’s finance minister during the reign of Louis XV. Though he never visited the islands, French colonists honoured him by naming the archipelago after him.
