Police in the Eastern South Region have intensified security operations ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election, arresting 10 suspects and seizing nine firearms in a series of targeted swoops.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command confirmed that the weapons recovered include eight pump-action shotguns and one locally manufactured single-barrel gun, stressing that the crackdown is part of efforts to curb the illegal possession and use of firearms during election-related activities.

Key Arrests and Seizures

  • St Dominic Hospital, Akwatia (Aug 22): Officers intercepted a vehicle driven by Bernard Kumi Ofosu. A search revealed a Tulpar double-barrel pump-action gun, four AAA live cartridges, and two FTB blank cartridges. Although Ofosu presented a valid licence, he was detained while the items were kept for verification.

  • Akwatia Y-Junction checkpoint: Police arrested Joshua Amenuku after 15 live BB cartridges were found on him. A follow-up search at his home uncovered an ADLER TULPA pump-action gun and five more cartridges.

  • Boadua Livingstone checkpoint: A Toyota Hilux was stopped, leading to the arrest of Enoch Asiedu and Chinese national Lu Youyan. Four live BB cartridges were retrieved, allegedly belonging to their employer, Mohammed, who owns the vehicle. Police say a search is underway to arrest Mohammed.

  • Boadua Livingstone Junction checkpoint (Aug 23): Pieterson Joseph was arrested with an ADLER TULPAR pump-action gun and 46 AAA and BB cartridges. He admitted ownership.

  • Staff Village Boadua checkpoint: Police intercepted a Toyota Tundra (Reg. No. WR 5535-13) and recovered three pump-action guns—a Pardus, a Huglu Atroe, and another brand. The driver, Stephen Nkansah, claimed ownership of two and said the third belonged to his chief. He was detained for further questioning.

Police Assure Security Before Election

The Eastern South Regional Police Command reiterated its resolve to maintain peace and security before, during, and after the Akwatia by-election. All suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
