A heavy pall has settled over the Ayawaso East constituency as residents, political leaders and family members gather to lay their Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, to rest today, Monday, January 5.

The seasoned lawmaker passed away on Sunday, January 4, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a brief illness, prompting an outpouring of grief across Nima, Kanda and surrounding communities he represented for years.

In keeping with Islamic tradition, burial rites are being observed within 24 hours of his death, with thousands of mourners expected to converge on key locations within the constituency.

Funeral arrangements were expedited through high-level coordination, with the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso North, Yussif Jajah, confirming that an intervention by President John Dramani Mahama helped fast-track administrative processes at the mortuary.

“As we speak, the body has been brought home,”

Mr Jajah said late Sunday, indicating that the remains had been released to the family to allow burial preparations to proceed without delay.

The funeral programme reflects the late MP’s deep-rooted connection to his constituents. Janazah prayers are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the Ayawaso East Constituency Office along the Kanda Highway, and will be led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

Following the prayers, the body will be transported to the Madina Cemetery for burial.

Naser Toure Mahama was widely known as a grassroots politician, with a parliamentary record shaped by advocacy for urban renewal in Nima and sustained efforts to promote youth empowerment within Zongo communities.

To ensure order and public safety, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command is expected to deploy officers to manage traffic along the Kanda Highway and adjoining roads leading into the Nima–Mamobi enclave. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes until mid-afternoon.

Across Nima, residents have described the late MP as a unifying figure—humble, approachable and deeply committed to his people.

His death leaves a notable gap in Parliament, where he was regarded as a vital link between the legislature and Accra’s densely populated inner-city communities.
