<p>Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasised that his leadership style is built on results, resilience, and balance, not intimidation or unnecessary noise.</p><p>Speaking to party supporters at the NPP headquarters in Accra after filing his nomination forms, Dr Bawumia urged Ghanaians not to mistake his calm demeanour for weakness.</p><p>“I am cool on the outside, but do not underestimate my inner strength. That is what I bring to the leadership of the NPP and the leadership of Ghana. That is what makes a leader balanced and formidable,” Dr Bawumia said.</p><p>He highlighted that his track record and experience make him the most prepared candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election and eventually govern Ghana from 2029.</p><p>“I demonstrate my strength by getting results, not by making noise or by insulting or by bragging about money. The combined effect of how well Bawumia is known today and my experience as vice president makes me the most prepared person for the NPP’s quest for the 2028 election and governance in 2029,” he explained.</p><p>Quoting Ghana’s former Prime Minister, Kofi Abrefa Busia, Dr Bawumia acknowledged that political leadership demands toughness and the ability to withstand constant criticism.</p><p>“Fellow Kukrudites, in the words of Kofi Abrefa Busia, the qualification to be a success in Ghana’s politics includes a large capacity to stomach all sorts of attacks. I am not oblivious to the fact that the NDC and, lately, elements within our own family subject me to daily attacks. In fact, I expect that there will be more attacks in the coming months and years. But if I have learnt anything from history, it includes the fact that a man must be formidable so that no matter the adversity, he stands tall, focused, and resolute,” he said.</p><p>The NPP presidential candidate further argued that his critics have run out of valid points against him and that time has vindicated his leadership.</p><p>“All that can be hurled at me has already been attacked. As the days go by, time has shown great vindication. The BoG, the IMF, and even the NDC kingpins are now admitting on many matters that Bawumia was right. What more can they say about me now? A joint NADMO-led search and rescue team has since been dispatched to recover those still unaccounted for.</p><h2>Roots of the Clashes</h2><p>The violence, which broke out on Sunday, August 24, stemmed from renewed tensions over disputed land ownership. Initial reports indicate that at least six people were killed, with others sustaining severe injuries, as per 3News. </p><p>Tensions reportedly escalated after the chief of Gbenyiri returned to his community. In a show of respect, the chief of Kalba instructed his son to escort him, but they were allegedly ambushed by a rival faction. <p><strong>By Sharryl Annor</strong></p><p>Over 2000 frustrated applicants of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise are calling on President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Defence to urgently intervene after the sudden termination of their enlistment process.</p><p>The affected applicants, who began the recruitment journey in 2021, say they have endured four years of rigorous screening, only to be informed that their batch has been cancelled.</p><p>According to them, this decision has left many jobless, financially drained, and uncertain about their future.</p><h2>Recruitment Interrupted by 2024 Elections</h2><p>Convener of the group, Kumatey Joshua Adams, told <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="text-blue-600 hover:text-blue-800 underline" href="https://www.ghnewsmedia.com/"><em>GhanaNewsMedia</em></a> that the recruitment process was initially divided into three batches due to the large number of applicants. While the first two batches successfully completed training and were enlisted, the third batch faced delays as the 2024 general elections interrupted their process.</p><p>“When we started the recruitment exercise in 2021, we had to be divided into three batches because there were so many of us, hoping it would soon be our turn. But when it finally got to us, the elections disrupted the process. We were assured of enlistment afterwards, only to be told now that the process has been cancelled,” Kumatey explained.</p><p>He revealed that applicants have now been asked to reapply under new age restrictions and medical requirements, a directive he described as unfair to those who have already invested four years in the process.</p><h2>Sacrifices and Struggles of Applicants</h2><p>Many of the applicants say they sacrificed jobs, education, and financial stability in anticipation of joining the army. Kumatey lamented that some even slept on the streets of Accra while waiting for updates.</p><p>“Some of us quit our jobs because we believed this dream was within reach. Now, after four years, we are being told to start afresh. <p>A court in Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday, August 27, sentenced senior government official Baltasar Ebang Engonga to eight years in prison for embezzlement.</p><p>According to AFP, the Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting public funds, specifically travel allowances, for personal use. </p><p>The verdict was confirmed by Hilario Mitogo, press director of the Supreme Court, in a message to reporters.</p><p>Engonga, who once headed the national financial investigation agency, faced trial alongside five other high-ranking officials accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in a country heavily reliant on oil revenues.</p><p>The disgraced official, widely known by the nickname “Bello”, previously gained international notoriety when explicit sex tapes allegedly recorded with the wives of other officials surfaced online while he was in detention. </p><p>Some videos were reportedly filmed in his office at the finance ministry.</p><p>The scandal fuelled a wave of viral reactions across social media, including parody songs, dances, and memes mocking a fictitious potency drug dubbed <em>“Balthazariem”.</em></p><p>In addition to his prison term, the court imposed a fine of $220,000 on Engonga.</p><p></p>

<p>The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, has announced that cryptocurrency traders in Ghana will not be exempt from taxation as the Authority prepares to roll out new digital tools to monitor gains from virtual assets.</p><p>Speaking on Joy News’ <em>PM Express Business Edition</em> on Thursday, Mr Sarpong highlighted the growing relevance of cryptocurrency in Ghana’s economy. He noted:</p><p>“One interesting area is crypto. The crypto is evolving and growing very well. And today we have people who are dealing with cryptocurrency, and they are making money. That area is evolving.</p><p>Our laws are coming up. So again, we are working with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Bank of Ghana to bring the regulation. But in terms of tax laws, one, the tax law is still not a new one. If you make a profit or gain, you’re supposed to pay that.”</p><p>He further explained that the GRA is enhancing its systems to track and capture digital transactions. According to him:</p><p>“So today, the technology we are going to deploy will be able to bring in all the crypto accounts into focus, and then we will work with these individuals to make sure that we bring them into the tax net.”</p><p>Mr Sarpong emphasised that this initiative forms part of a broader agenda to align Ghana’s tax regime with the fast-growing digital economy. He stated:</p><p>“Digitisation and the digital economy are here with us and into the future, and most importantly, even the taxpayer of the future is digital. And that’s why we as GRA are preparing ourselves to be digitally ready for today and into the future, so we can continue to deliver on our mandate of revenue mobility.”</p><p>The Commissioner-General added that beyond cryptocurrency, the Authority is also seeking to close gaps in online transactions to ensure compliance with existing tax rules. He pointed out that:</p><p>“So today, online business tax rules already exist, which is, for example, the VAT. If you are buying as you walk into a physical shop, you pay VAT. In the same way, when you are buying online, you pay VAT.</p><p>So what we are doing is using the technology so that when people buy online, we can access the VAT and the tax at the point of payment so that today’s challenge of not finding them to come and follow, or not even knowing what they have done online, will be a thing of the past.</p><p>And that introduction of technology we are working on, again, that’s something we believe that by September, we will deploy that technology and run a pilot for the end of the year and scale it up.”</p><p>He stressed that the government’s strategy is not to create multiple new taxes but to strengthen the enforcement of existing ones. As he concluded:</p><p>“So you know the policy of President Mahama and the Finance Minister is that we are not introducing so many new taxes because we already have within our tax laws sufficient measures that, once implemented, will help us deepen and expand the tax net.”</p><p>In essence, the GRA’s renewed focus on cryptocurrency and online transactions reflects Ghana’s determination to adapt its tax system to the realities of a digital economy.</p>

A disturbing domestic violence incident unfolded in Anum, within the Assin North District of the Central Region, where a 35-year-old woman, Faustina Ackom, was allegedly shot by her husband, 41-year-old Wahibu Bukari, over suspicions of infidelity.

The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday after Bukari reportedly confronted his wife upon discovering unfamiliar contact numbers on her mobile phone. 

According to preliminary accounts, he woke her at about 12:30 a.m. for questioning, which escalated into a violent altercation.

During the confrontation, Bukari allegedly shot Faustina in the left arm and chest as she attempted to flee. 

Her cries for help drew the attention of neighbours, who rushed to her aid, as per Graphic Online.

Faustina, a trader and mother of four, is currently receiving treatment at St Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu.

Eyewitness Lydia Yeboah noted that the suspect, who has been battling health issues, had long expressed doubts about his wife’s fidelity. Following the attack, Bukari fled the scene and remains at large.

Police suspect he may have escaped to Assin Fosu, Kushia, or Twifo Praso. 

Meanwhile, a team from the Assin Fosu Divisional Police Command has visited the victim at the hospital to assess her condition and gather firsthand information.

Law enforcement has launched a full-scale investigation into the case.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared a general amnesty for members who were either suspended or facing disciplinary action, in a move aimed at promoting unity and reconciliation within the party.

The decision was communicated in a directive signed by the Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey, following an Emergency National Council meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025.

“We hereby serve notice that this directive lifts all such suspensions and waives any ongoing proceedings against affected members,” the statement read.

The party, however, clarified that members seeking reinstatement must formally apply to the national secretariat. Additionally, reinstated members will not be eligible to contest in any internal party election until a mandatory two-year waiting period has passed.

According to the directive, the measure reflects the NPP’s determination to consolidate internal cohesion, strengthen solidarity, and prepare collectively for the political tasks ahead—particularly the 2028 general elections.

The statement further cautioned party leaders at all levels against arbitrary suspensions, stressing that disciplinary processes must strictly adhere to the party’s constitution.

“The National Secretariat requests your full compliance with this directive,” it concluded, urging executives across the country to abide by the new guidelines.

Police have confirmed the arrest of a 47-year-old man following an incident in which Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo was allegedly subjected to racist abuse during the club’s Premier League opener against Liverpool at Anfield.

The match was temporarily suspended in the 29th minute after Semenyo, 25, reported the abuse to the referee. 

Officers later escorted a supporter in a wheelchair from the stadium before making the arrest.

Merseyside Police announced the man is being held on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, match commander, said:

“Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form. We take incidents like this very seriously and will be proactively seeking football banning orders against those responsible.”

MTN Ghana has announced a scheduled system upgrade that will result in a temporary suspension of all Mobile Money (MoMo) services for six hours on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

The telecom leader stated that the downtime will occur from 12:00 am to 6:00 am to facilitate essential maintenance and system improvements. 

During this period, all MoMo functionalities — including deposits, withdrawals, person-to-person transfers, and merchant payments — will be unavailable.

This brief outage carries significant implications for Ghana’s financial ecosystem, where MTN Mobile Money has become the dominant transaction platform, processing billions of cedis annually and playing a crucial role in driving financial inclusion.

In an interview with Citi FM, Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology & Service Delivery Officer of Mobile Money Limited, emphasised the importance of the planned upgrade.

"Please be informed of a planned system upgrade on 17th August 2025, from 12 midnight to 6 am. During this period, all Mobile Money services will be unavailable. 

This upgrade is to improve our services to you. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding."

According to MTN, the upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to enhance customer experience, following previous modernisation projects aimed at improving transaction speed, strengthening fraud prevention measures, and introducing innovative digital services.

The company assured customers that all funds will remain safe and services will be restored immediately after the maintenance window. 

MTN is advising individuals and businesses to complete any urgent transactions ahead of the scheduled downtime to avoid disruptions.

The Ghana Police Service has released details of road closures and traffic diversions in Accra ahead of the interdenominational and interfaith state funeral for the eight individuals who lost their lives in the tragic military helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom on Wednesday, August 6. 

The ceremony will take place on Friday, August 15, 2025.

In a statement dated Thursday, August 14, the police announced that the following roads within the event vicinity will be closed to vehicular traffic:

- 28th February Road – From CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction.

- Osu Cemetery Traffic Light – On Lokko Street.

- Castle Road – From AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.

- Starlet 91 Road – Closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.

Motorists are advised to take note of the following alternative routes during the funeral:

Vehicles from La, Labone, and Osu using 28th February Road towards the Accra Central Business District and the Ministries will be diverted onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light, connecting to Oxford Street.

Traffic from Lokko Street, Osu, heading towards Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu.

Vehicles from John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection, leading to the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection.

“The proposed sale will improve Nigeria’s capability to meet current and future threats through operations against terrorist organisations and to counter illicit trafficking in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea,” the DSCA said. “Nigeria will have no difficulty absorbing these munitions into its armed forces.”

## Contractors and Implementation

Principal contractors include RTX Missiles and Defence, Lockheed Martin, and BAE Systems. The DSCA confirmed that no U.S. government or contractor personnel will be permanently stationed in Nigeria as part of the deal.

“The actual dollar value will be lower depending on final requirements, budget authority, and signed agreements,” the agency noted, clarifying that the $346 million figure represents the maximum estimated cost.

A raging fire swept through multiple businesses near Nogora Junction, close to Ho Technical University, on the evening of Wednesday, August 13, causing destruction estimated at over GHS 1 million.

The blaze, which ignited around 6:00 p.m., quickly engulfed several establishments, including the popular Nogora Pub, two boutiques, and adjoining shops. 

Eyewitnesses say the fire spread rapidly, leaving business owners and workers with little time to salvage property.

“We immediately grabbed fire extinguishers, but the fire was too intense,” a pub employee recounted, adding that persistent power fluctuations in the area earlier that day may have triggered the incident.

Another affected shop owner echoed this suspicion, noting that electrical lights had been flickering for hours before the fire erupted.

“We were inside the pub when one of the staff raised the alarm. We tried using fire extinguishers, but the flames were uncontrollable, so we called the fire service,” one eyewitness told 3News.


“Since there was no gas or cooking involved, we suspect an electrical fault started the fire.”

Business owners described the losses as catastrophic, with one estimating the damage to exceed GHS 1 million.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service in Ho responded promptly, battling the inferno for over two hours before bringing it under control. 

Divisional Fire Officer Grade II Sedem Tay, the Ho Municipal Commander, commended his team for their swift action and assured that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause.

Authorities are urging residents and businesses in the area to exercise caution and address any electrical issues promptly to prevent similar tragedies.



Fire near Ho Technical University destroys shops worth over GH₵1 Million

Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, a Justice of the Court of Appeal and former Director of the Ghana School of Law, has officially been recalled to serve the judiciary in a full capacity as a judge.

The directive, issued by the Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, requires Justice Oppong to hand over his role as Director of Legal Education to Professor Raymond Atuguba, a former Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law.

According to a letter dated August 8, 2025, Justice Oppong’s recall takes effect from September 1, 2025, with Prof. Atuguba stepping in as Acting Director until a substantive appointment is made.

“The Judiciary now requires your full services, so you are recalled from the position of Director of Legal Education with effect from 1st September 2025.
You are to hand over to Professor Raymond A. Atuguba, former Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, who has been appointed Ag. Director of Legal Education of the General Legal Council while a search party is put in place for a permanent Director of Legal Education,” the letter from the Acting Chief Justice stated.

The Kwabenya Circuit Court has sentenced a 58-year-old mason, Joshua Bledi, to 10 years in prison for incest after impregnating his 17-year-old daughter, who has since given birth to a seven-month-old baby, according to the Ghana News Agency.

Bledi pleaded guilty to the charge, admitting that the prosecution’s account was accurate, and appealed for leniency. 

The court, however, convicted and sentenced him, taking into account his age, the premeditated nature of the crime, and the fact that he did not waste the court’s time by admitting guilt.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Gershon Togbe Achondo, described the offence as a cultural abomination and noted that such cases have been increasing in recent times. He urged the court to impose a stiff sentence to serve as a deterrent to others.

The prosecution revealed that the victim, a hairdressing apprentice from Musuku, Kwabenya, lived with her father after her mother instructed her to do so. 

She later became pregnant and went to the Ga East Hospital to deliver but faced challenges in paying her medical bills.

The Social Welfare Department at the hospital intervened and waived her bills.

During enquiries, the victim disclosed that her father was responsible for her pregnancy and had been sexually abusing her repeatedly.

A report was filed with the Kwabenya Domestic Violence and Victims’ Support Unit (DOVVSU), and a police medical examination confirmed the abuse, leading to Bledi’s arrest.

Meanwhile, the Abuse Relief Corps, a non-profit organisation, has stepped in to support the victim and her baby.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has commended residents who voluntarily returned parts and belongings taken from the recent helicopter crash site at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

Speaking during a live session on his social media page, Dr Amoakohene said the items retrieved will significantly aid ongoing investigations into the cause of the crash. 

He praised the swift public response to calls for the return of missing parts.

“Some parts of the helicopter and other belongings were not found at the scene, so we announced that anyone who picked something up should return it. We promised a small reward, and thankfully, some people have submitted items to the unit committee and assembly members,” he said.

The minister appealed to anyone still in possession of crash-related items to return them immediately, stressing that every component, no matter how small, is vital for the investigation.

“Anyone still holding on to parts or belongings from the crash should return them, no matter how small. These things are needed for the investigation,” he added.

Dr Amoakohene further disclosed that counselling psychologists have been arranged to provide emotional and psychological support to families of the victims, as well as individuals who were at the scene, particularly those involved in the forest search and recovery efforts.

He also noted that counselling services would be available to people who travelled from other regions for the event prior to the crash and to anyone affected by the tragedy. A dedicated contact number will soon be released for those seeking assistance.

Concluding his address, Dr Amoakohene expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and solidarity during this challenging period, assuring that all returned items will contribute greatly to uncovering the full circumstances of the crash.

A major fire outbreak on Monday evening has destroyed the housemaster’s bungalow and partially damaged the boys’ dormitory at Oyoko Methodist Senior High School in Koforidua, Eastern Region.

The incident occurred around 7:00 PM and reportedly began in the housemaster’s bungalow, located adjacent to the boys’ dormitory. 

Eyewitnesses say the flames spread rapidly, intensifying before emergency responders could arrive.

By the time personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reached the scene, the bungalow had been completely consumed by fire. 

The blaze had begun spreading to the boys’ dormitory, raising concerns of a larger catastrophe.

Thanks to the swift and coordinated response of the GNFS, firefighters managed to bring the situation under control and prevent the complete destruction of the dormitory. 

Their timely intervention was instrumental in averting further devastation.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. 

School authorities and fire officials have confirmed that investigations will be launched to determine the source of the blaze.

The General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, has firmly refuted circulating claims that the GHC18 million secured through the association’s latest media rights agreement with Adesa Production Limited (APL) originated from government funding.

Announced last week in Accra ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, the landmark broadcast partnership is set to inject GHC1 million into each top-tier club before the campaign begins.

Addressing rumours that the funds were sourced from the state, Harrison Addo stressed that no direct financial contribution was made by the government.

He acknowledged that while the government played a key facilitative role, its contribution was non-monetary. 

Notably, he highlighted the support of prominent government officials such as Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and Minister of Youth and Sports Kofi Adams.

“The Chief of Staff, Majority Leader and the Sports Minister all said that they are in support of the partnership, so the enabling environment for other companies who will also want to come and support the processes and the benefits are there.

“The government has not given us physical cash to invest in the league, but we are hoping that this partnership works well because it is in the interest of the country if it does work well, but the money is not from the government,” he added.

<p>A weekend assault by the jihadist group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in Burkina Faso has left four members of a government-backed militia dead, with their weapons seized by the attackers.</p><p>According to a JoyNews report by correspondent Eliasu Tanko from Ghana’s Upper East Region, the incident occurred on Saturday, August 23, in Bittou, a town near the Ghanaian border within the Bawku Municipality.</p><p>The attack has heightened security concerns about the fragile situation along the Burkina Faso–Ghana frontier.</p><p>The victims were part of the Volunteers for the Protection of the Fatherland (VDP), a civilian force created by the Burkinabe government to support the national army in combating a prolonged jihadist insurgency.</p><p>Military sources in Burkina Faso confirmed the incident, stating<em>,</em></p><p><em>“A small team of VDP went into the bush and encountered bad guys [jihadists]. Very wrong.”</em></p><p>This latest attack is part of a series of violent escalations in the region.</p><p>JNIM, a powerful al-Qaeda affiliate operating across the Sahel, has previously claimed responsibility for deadly assaults, including a June strike in Mongade near Kulungugu and a March raid in Garanga, close to Nware in Ghana’s Pusiga District.</p><p>These recurring incursions underscore the growing instability along the shared borders of Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Togo, raising fears of a possible spillover into Ghanaian territory.</p><p>In response, Burkinabe security and defence forces have launched a sweep operation along the border zone, aiming to neutralise jihadist threats and restore calm to vulnerable communities.</p><p>The attack in Bittou not only exposes the growing strength of jihadist groups in the Sahel but also signals the urgent need for tighter cross-border security collaboration.</p><p>With the threat edging closer to Ghana and Togo, regional governments face increasing pressure to strengthen intelligence sharing and joint military efforts to prevent further incursions and protect border communities.</p>

<p><strong>By Ibrahim Abode</strong></p><p>The Whistleblowers, Activists and Journalists Safety International Centre (WAJSIC) has successfully concluded a four-day intensive training programme in investigative journalism and safety for eight of its in-house residents.</p><p>Held from August 5 to 8, 2025, at WAJSIC’s headquarters in Accra, the programme was supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) through its <em>Participation, Accountability and Integrity for a Resilient Democracy (PAIReD)</em> initiative.</p><div class="my-4"><img class="max-w-full h-auto rounded-lg shadow-sm" src="https://srmshbfmongacwhafkly.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/article-images/1756078348710-y8420jkdm8.jpg" alt="WAJSIC Workshop" data-credit="WAJSIC " title="WAJSIC Workshop" width="auto" height="auto"></div><p>WAJSIC, a Ghana-based nonprofit with continental reach, provides protection and support for journalists, whistleblowers, and activists who face persecution for exposing corruption, defending human rights, or uncovering injustices.</p><p>Many participants in this training are either living in exile or under active threat due to their investigative work.</p><p>The training theme, “Safe Investigative Journalism for Journalists Under Threat”, emphasised both professional development and personal security.</p><p>Facilitated by award-winning Ghanaian investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, the sessions covered story selection, evidence verification, legal risk management, undercover ethics, and digital and physical safety measures to protect both reporters and their sources.</p><p>WAJSIC’s Executive Director, Abdoulaye Diallo, and Chief Operations Officer, Adjapong Benjamin, encouraged participants to view their role as defenders of accountability and democracy.</p><p>“Investigative journalism is more than telling a story,” Diallo noted. “It is about protecting the public’s right to know, even when that mission puts you at risk.”</p><div class="my-4"><img class="max-w-full h-auto rounded-lg shadow-sm" src="https://srmshbfmongacwhafkly.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/article-images/1756078430459-mk2m2qk6lz.jpg" alt="WAJSIC " data-credit="WAJSIC " title="WAJSIC " width="auto" height="auto"></div><p>Representing GIZ, Kweku Lartey Obeng, Head of Component for Strengthening Anti-Corruption Actors under the PAIReD programme, underscored the need for fearless journalism in democratic societies.</p><p>“Strong democracies depend on fearless truth-telling. Through partnerships like this, we ensure that those who speak truth to power have the tools and protection they need,” he said.</p><p>On the final day, WAJSIC’s founder and chairman, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, joined the session, sharing insights from his career in undercover reporting.</p><p>Wearing his signature mask, he reminded participants that “courage is contagious” and that integrity in their work is as vital as the stories they uncover.</p><p>The programme concluded with a networking barbecue, providing participants with space to reflect on lessons learnt and strengthen bonds.</p><p>One journalist currently hosted by WAJSIC expressed gratitude:</p><p><em>“It’s the first time in a long time I’ve felt both safe and empowered. I now have tools I didn’t even know I needed.”</em></p><p>Funding came from the German Cooperation, co-funded by the European Union, the Swiss Confederation, and Ghana’s Ministry of Finance, as part of a three-pronged support programme for WAJSIC residents.</p><p>By combining skill development with personal security training, WAJSIC reaffirmed its mission to safeguard the people behind the stories — and, ultimately, to defend the public’s right to truth.</p>

GES emphasised that such reports were misleading and urged the public to rely on official communication.</p><p>Parents, students, and school administrators have been encouraged to consult the official academic calendar and follow regular updates from GES to avoid misinformation.</p><p></p>

Free SHS double-track system not cancelled – GES

<p>The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that senior high schools across the country will reopen in October for the 2025/2026 academic year under a revised academic calendar.</p><p>In a circular dated August 20, 2025, and signed by the Director of Schools and Instructions Division, Mr Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, the GES directed Regional Directors to ensure that heads of institutions strictly comply with the new schedule.</p><p>According to the calendar, schools will operate under a single-track and a modified double-track system, referred to as the <em>transitional academic calendars</em>.</p><p>Under the single-track system, first- and second-year students are to report on October 18, 2025, while third-year students will resume earlier on October 11, 2025.</p><p>The first term will run until February 27, 2026, with a Christmas break scheduled from December 20, 2025, to January 4, 2026. The second term will span May 4 to August 21, 2026.</p><p>For double-track schools, the timetable has been slightly adjusted. First-year students will reopen on October 18, 2025, while third-year students will return on October 27, 2025. <p>The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) has strongly condemned comments made by the General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Dr David Tenkorang Twum, describing them as derogatory and disrespectful towards farmers.</p><p>In a statement issued on Friday, GNAFF said it had taken serious notice of remarks made by Dr Tenkorang Twum during an interview on Asempa FM’s <em>Ekosii Sen</em> political programme, where he allegedly launched an “unprovoked verbal attack” on farmers in addition to making unprintable comments about the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyemang-Manu.</p><p>The Association, regarded as the umbrella body of farmers and fishermen across the country, said it was “deeply shocked and dismayed” that such comments could be made by a leader of a professional organisation who, in its view, ought to conduct himself with decorum and respect.</p><p>“Farmers and fishermen have long been the backbone of Ghana’s economy, contributing immensely to the nation’s growth, food security and economic survival. It is therefore highly disheartening, discourteous and unacceptable for such a venerable group to be subjected to public ridicule in this manner,” the statement said.</p><p>GNAFF has given Dr Tenkorang Twum <strong>24 hours</strong> to retract his comments and render an unqualified apology to farmers and fishermen across Ghana. <p>A Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 34-year-old former field officer of the National Trust Holding Company (NTHC) Trustee, Comfort Asante, to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour after she was found guilty of stealing GH¢96,490 belonging to customers of the company.</p><p>Although Asante pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing and forgery, she admitted during investigations that she diverted the funds to settle a debt owed by her mother.</p><p>Delivering judgement, the presiding judge, Mrs Hathia Ama Manu, ruled that Asante’s actions were criminal and must serve as a deterrent to others.</p><h2>How the Theft Was Uncovered</h2><p>The prosecutor, Chief Superintendent of Police Alex Odonkor, told the court that the NTHC Trustee, a firm registered to manage pension schemes in Ghana, filed the complaint after receiving numerous reports from contributors between May 2 and 5, 2023.</p><p>As a field officer, Asante’s role involved educating the public, registering clients, collecting contributions for the Tier Three Pension Scheme (SSNIT Informal Scheme Product – SISP), updating customer passbooks, and electronically recording payments into the company’s system using an official mobile phone. </p><p>The system automatically generated receipt numbers and also sent SMS alerts to contributors confirming their payments.</p><p>However, the company began receiving complaints from customers who claimed they were not receiving confirmation messages despite making payments through Asante. </p><p>Upon reviewing their passbooks, NTHC detected discrepancies between the handwritten records and the official electronic records. </p><p>It was also discovered that the receipt numbers recorded by Asante did not match those generated by the company’s system.</p><h2>Investigations and Conviction</h2><p>Following an internal audit, NTHC confirmed that Asante had misappropriated GH¢96,490 from contributions made by 32 clients. A formal complaint was lodged with the police on May 17, 2023, leading to her arrest.</p><p>In her caution statement, Asante confessed to the offence. After a full trial, she was convicted and handed a five-year jail term with hard labour.</p><p></p>

Ex-NTHC officer jailed 5 years for stealing GH¢96k to pay mother’s debt

<p>A Tarkwa District Court One has sentenced a motorbike mechanic, Godfred Atta Hagan, to six months imprisonment with hard labour after he was found guilty of stealing a deliveryman’s Royal motorbike valued at GH¢13,000.</p><p>Hagan, who resides at Tamso Compound, pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea by the presiding judge, Charles Owusu Nsiah.</p><p>According to the prosecution, led by Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh, the complainant, Isaac Mensah Mbeah, a delivery rider living at Tamso, parked his Royal motorbike with registration number M-25-WT278 at his shop near the Tamso Municipal Assembly Basic School on April 16, 2025. </p><p>Later that night, around 1:00 a.m., he discovered the motorbike had been stolen.</p><p>A witness informed Mbeah that Hagan had been seen riding the stolen bike away. The matter was reported to the Tarkwa police, and Hagan subsequently went into hiding. </p><p>On May 11, 2025, police received a tip-off that he was lodging at a friend’s house, leading to his arrest.</p><p>During interrogation, Hagan led the police to the home of an accomplice known as Gucci, who is currently on the run. Some Ghanaians have welcomed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision not to contest the upcoming Tamale Central by-election.

In an official statement issued on August 11, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP announced it would not field a candidate in the race.

“The circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat has become vacant and the possibility of further polarisation of the country at this critical time informed our stance,” the statement read. 

The party further described participation under the current circumstances as “inhumane and unconscionable”.

According to the NPP, the decision was made in light of the sensitive nature of the vacancy and concerns about deepening political divisions. 

The move also aligns with Article 10(10)(1) of the party’s constitution.

The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the tragic death of the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology and Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who was among eight victims of a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In interviews with [Ghana News Media](https://www.ghnewsmedia.com/), members of the public praised the party’s stance. 

“Ideally, it is befitting that the New Patriotic Party opted out of the coming election. Most by-elections we witness have massive fights which also end up killing individuals,” said Nii Lartey. 

Another respondent, Akwasi, a cobbler, remarked, 

“I applaud the NPP for taking such an exemplary step. This will promote peace in our country. But that does not necessarily mean the NDC should not contest for the Akwatia by-election. The circumstances around both deaths are different.”

Under Article 112(5) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, when a parliamentary seat becomes vacant, the Clerk of Parliament must notify the Electoral Commission within seven days. 

A by-election must then be held within thirty days, except in cases of death, where the period extends to sixty days

NPP wins public praise for withdrawing from Tamale Central by-election after MP’s tragic death

The Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has pledged to take over the sponsorship of 47 medical students who were previously supported by the late Tamale Central MP and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Mr Iddrisu made the commitment on Tuesday, 12 August, after the students paid tribute to Dr Murtala during the third-day funeral rites (Adua) in Tamale.

The students described the late MP as a dedicated leader who consistently prioritised education and the welfare of young people. 

They also appealed to the government, benevolent organisations and individuals to continue supporting them in their studies.

In response, Haruna Iddrisu assured them of his readiness to take on the responsibility, saying he would ensure their education continues without interruption.

Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed was among eight people who lost their lives on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in a forested area at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofrom District of the Ashanti Region.

The Manhyia Palace has declared a one-day ban on all funerals across Asanteman on Thursday, 21 August 2025, as part of the One-Week Celebration of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

The directive, issued in a statement signed by Ambassador Nana Effah-Apenteng, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Manhyia Palace, is to enable the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the people of Asanteman to unite in mourning the revered Queen Mother, who died peacefully on Thursday, 7 August 2025.

The One-Week Celebration will take place at Bogyawe, Manhyia Palace, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on the day. Chiefs, dignitaries, and mourners from across Ghana and the diaspora are expected to attend.

Funeral bans are a longstanding tradition in the Asante Kingdom during major royal mourning periods, symbolising respect and solidarity with the Golden Stool. 

Thursday’s observance will mark the first public mourning since Nana Konadu Yiadom III’s passing, ahead of her final funeral rites to be announced later.

The late Asantehemaa will be remembered for her wisdom, compassion, and steadfast role in preserving Asante customs and guiding the women of Asanteman.

The Manhyia Palace has announced arrangements for the One-Week Celebration of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, 7 August 2025.

His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, officially informed the Asanteman Council of the demise of the revered Queen Mother on Monday, 11 August 2025. The news of her passing has since been met with deep grief across the Asante Kingdom and beyond, as tributes continue to pour in for her decades of dedicated service to the Asante people.

According to a statement issued by Ambassador Nana Effah-Apenteng, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Manhyia Palace, the One-Week Celebration will be observed on Thursday, 21 August 2025, at Bogyawe, Manhyia Palace, from 12 noon to 6 p.m.

The 31st Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially approved an amendment to extend the tenure of the Association’s president from a maximum of two terms to three.

The decision was made on Tuesday during a decisive vote at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram. Out of 124 delegates, 114 voted in favour of the change, three abstained, and six opposed it.

Under the revised statutes, a GFA president can now serve three four-year terms, amounting to a maximum of 12 years in office, compared to the previous limit of eight years.

The move represents a significant shift in Ghana’s football governance, offering longer leadership continuity and potentially allowing presidents more time to implement long-term strategies.

According to the GFA, the amendment forms part of a broader review of the Association’s statutes, aimed at strengthening governance structures and aligning them with international best practices.

The First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Zakari Mumuni, has disclosed that the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme has more than doubled the central bank’s gold reserves over the past five years.

Speaking at a London event on central banking and commodity leverage, Dr Mumuni noted that the initiative launched in June 2021, when reserves stood at just 8.74 tonnes, has significantly strengthened Ghana’s financial position.

"Ultimately, this programme was not just about reserve accumulation but also about unlocking the potential of the country’s commodity base," he stated.

## Programme Objectives & Achievements

The BoG’s gold purchase scheme was designed to:

- Diversify foreign exchange reserves by acquiring gold from local mining firms (paid in Ghana cedis)

- Reduce reliance on the US dollar, which is vulnerable to global market volatility

- Strengthen financial stability by leveraging gold holdings for more favourable short-term financing

✔ 145.95 tonnes of gold purchased since inception

✔ Reserves surged from 8.74 tonnes (2021) to 34.40 tonnes—a 294% increase in physical holdings.

"This initiative has enabled the Bank to diversify its foreign exchange reserves portfolio and leverage the Bank’s gold holdings to raise cheaper short-term financing," Dr Mumuni explained.

The programme marks a deliberate pivot from dollar dependency to asset diversification, addressing longstanding concerns about Ghana’s historically low gold reserves. 

With global economic uncertainties persisting, the BoG’s gold-backed strategy aims to reinforce monetary resilience while capitalising on domestic mineral resources.

The sustained growth in reserves underscores the programme’s success in transforming Ghana’s commodity wealth into a stabilising financial instrument.

## Background to the Tragedy

The August 6 crash occurred in the Adansi area of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of eight people, including the two officials honoured at Sunday’s service. 

The helicopter, reportedly on an official assignment, went down in adverse weather conditions, triggering nationwide mourning and tributes from political leaders, colleagues, and citizens alike.

The incident has sparked renewed discussions on aviation safety for government and military operations, with investigations currently underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Following the prayers, the bodies of Dr Murtala Muhammad and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed were laid to rest at the Military Cemetery in Accra, in accordance with Islamic rites.

Dean Henderson was the hero as Crystal Palace beat Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

The game ended 2-2 in normal time. Henderson saved two penalties from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, while Mohamed Salah fired over. 

Substitute Justin Devenny then smashed the winning spot-kick past Alisson Becker to seal the trophy.

Liverpool started strongly with four debutants in the lineup. They took the lead after just four minutes when Hugo Ekitike finished a flowing move involving nine players, slotting Florian Wirtz’s pass into the bottom-right corner.

The Office of the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations has urged religious leaders across Ghana to formally communicate any prophecies or spiritual revelations of national significance to the government.

In a statement released on Sunday, August 10, on behalf of President John Mahama, Presidential Envoy Elvis Afriyie Ankra expressed “heartfelt appreciation” to churches and other faith-based organisations for their “unwavering spiritual support, intercessory prayers, and sustained leadership in promoting peace, moral integrity, and national unity.”

He underscored that the role of faith leaders in Ghana’s “spiritual and civic life remains indispensable”, urging them to channel any sensitive communications to his office to ensure prompt review and action.

“Any prophecy or spiritual insight of a national nature, especially those with implications for high-profile political leaders, governance, national security, or public stability, should be formally relayed to the Office of the Presidential Envoy for urgent review and appropriate escalation,” the statement said.

The office has made available official contact details, including an email address and telephone number, to facilitate the submission of such information.

Mr Afriyie Ankra also called for “intense prayers” in the wake of a recent tragic accident that claimed the lives of government officials, military personnel, and members of the ruling NDC party.

He appealed for spiritual support for “the President of the Republic, President John Mahama, the Government and all State institutions, the bereaved families and the entire nation of Ghana.”

“May the Lord comfort the afflicted, guide our leaders, and continue to preserve our beloved country,” the statement concluded, reaffirming a commitment to “continued partnership and shared spiritual responsibility” for the peace and prosperity of the nation.

President John Mahama’s administration is taking a proactive approach to managing the influence of religious messages, particularly prophecies, on national stability.

By encouraging religious leaders to formally submit such revelations to the Office of the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, the government is essentially establishing a structured communication channel between faith-based institutions and state authorities.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has called on Ghanaians to join in nationwide prayers following the devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent citizens, including two cabinet ministers.

Hon. Atanga made the appeal during a solemn memorial service at the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) in Bolgatanga on Sunday. 

The service, attended by regional officials, political leaders, and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was held to honour the memory of the victims and to comfort their grieving families.

Describing the crash as “a painful loss for the entire nation,” the Regional Minister urged citizens to pray for God’s mercy and protection over Ghana.

“We must seek divine guidance and safety for our country in these trying times,” he said, adding that the tragedy had sent shockwaves across the country.

Hon. Atanga revealed that the incident had struck particularly close to home for the people of the Upper East Region. 

He noted that the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Muniru Mohammed, had previously served as Upper East Regional Minister, while Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala was a native of the Builsa traditional area. 

Their deaths, he said, were not only a national loss but also a personal and regional heartbreak.

The Minister commended the resilience and unity shown by Ghanaians in the aftermath of the tragedy, stressing the importance of national solidarity during such moments of grief. 

He urged the public to continue supporting the bereaved families through prayer, comfort, and compassion.

The helicopter crash, which occurred on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, has been described as one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent Ghanaian history. 

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have appealed for the return of any items removed from the crash site to aid the inquiry.

Upper East regional minister calls for nationwide prayers after helicopter crash 

The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council (ARCC) has urged residents to return items taken from the site of Wednesday’s fatal helicopter crash in the region.

According to the ARCC, intelligence reports suggest that some people who arrived early at the crash scene on 6 August 2025 removed parts of the aircraft and other belongings. The Council is warning that anyone in possession of such items, no matter how small — including metal pieces, screws, boards or other components — must hand them back immediately.

Items can be returned to a Unit Committee, Assembly Member, Municipal or District Chief Executive, or to any member of the investigating team at the site.

To encourage compliance, the ARCC is offering a cash reward for the voluntary return of any recovered parts before the deadline of Monday, 11 August 2025.

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene warned that those who fail to return the items will be deemed criminals and face prosecution.

“The general public is hereby notified,” the Minister stated, stressing that the law will take its full course against offenders.

Ashanti Authorities demand return of helicopter crash site items

Asante Kotoko have learnt their opening opponents in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup, drawing Nigerian side Kwara United in the first preliminary round. The pairing was confirmed during Saturday’s draw.

The Kumasi-based club earned their ticket to the competition after lifting the Ghana FA Cup last month, defeating Golden Kicks 2-1 in the final. 

It will be Kotoko’s first appearance in Africa’s second-tier inter-club competition since 2022, and they are determined to make a strong impression.

The Porcupine Warriors will host the first leg of the tie at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium between September 19 and 21. The decisive return leg will take place in Nigeria from September 26 to 28.

Kwara United, on the other hand, are entering the tournament with momentum after clinching their maiden President’s Federation Cup title. 

They overcame Abakaliki FC in the final, prevailing 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw.

If Kotoko progress, they will face Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca in the second preliminary round. 

Wydad, a decorated side with multiple CAF Champions League titles, will join the competition at that stage—creating what could be a stern early challenge for the Ghanaian outfit.

The second-round fixtures are scheduled for October 17–19 for the first leg and October 24–26 for the return encounter. The aggregate winner will secure a coveted spot in the group stage, putting them within reach of continental glory and the financial rewards that come with it.

The tragic crash in the Adansi area claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, and five others.

Mr Nketiah disclosed that a last-minute change in plans saw Dr Sarpong represent him on a trip to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP), a decision that ultimately spared his life.

Speaking while consoling one of the bereaved families, he said, 

“Allah does what he wants. I was supposed to be on the flight, and at the last minute, I directed my vice chairman, Dr Sarpong, to go and stand in for the party, and he accepted it.”

Mr Nketiah encouraged the grieving families to find comfort in their faith, describing the incident as a reminder of life’s uncertainties.

Reflecting on the tragic loss of Dr Sarpong and the seven others, he stated, 

“In your human ways, you may be thinking that if I had not sent Sarpong, maybe he would be living. But who knows? God might have decided that if this is his time, he will be knocked down by a trotro [commercial bus] in Accra. So, we don’t question what Allah wants to do. So, in all things, we give thanks to him.”

While acknowledging the magnitude of the loss, he further noted that “if it didn’t happen, something worse might have happened,” urging mourners to hold on to that possibility for comfort.

Mr Nketiah described Dr Sarpong’s decision to take his place as an act of selfless service to both the party and the nation, emphasising that his passing leaves a deep void in the NDC.

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded two police officers, Lance Corporal William Atia Asitanga and Lance Corporal Sulemana Zanya Abdul-Rahman, for their alleged roles in the theft of 16 CZ assault rifles from a police armoury, a case that has sparked serious concerns over security lapses within the Ghana Police Service.

Presiding Judge, Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah, heard that the incident occurred in March 2024 at the National Counter Terrorism Department in Accra, where Asitanga, 32, was serving as the department’s armourer. 

He has been charged with stealing the rifles, while Abdul-Rahman, 27, stationed at Asiwa in the Bekwai District of the Ashanti Region, faces a charge of abetment to steal. Both pleaded not guilty, as per the Ghana News Agency.

Prosecutor Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye told the court that an internal audit uncovered the missing rifles. 

Asitanga, who was solely responsible for managing the department’s arms and ammunition, could not account for them. Subsequent investigations linked Abdul-Rahman to the alleged theft.

The court has ordered the two to be held in police custody as investigations continue. They are expected to reappear before the court on August 20, 2025. DSP Nyamekye added that both officers are cooperating with investigators.

The disappearance of the rifles from a sensitive security unit has raised alarms over potential risks to national security and public safety should the weapons fall into the wrong hands. 

The case has also renewed calls for stricter oversight and tighter security measures in armoury management within the country’s security agencies.

The Ghana Police Service has not yet released a public statement on the matter, but the decision to remand the accused officers reflects the seriousness with which the case is being treated.



Two police officers remanded over alleged theft of 16 assault rifles

Former Sports Minister and current Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has called for urgent action against illegal mining (“galamsey”) in the wake of the helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.

According to Vanderpuye, the deceased had “sacrificed their lives” in their commitment to ending galamsey, and the most fitting tribute would be a decisive and uncompromising crackdown on the menace.

Speaking at a flower-laying ceremony on Friday, August 8, 2025, he declared:

“For the lives of these people, I would say we should go all out and finish these galamsey people. I will support any decision to go all out in this situation.

These people have sacrificed their lives for the sake of ending galamsey. If they’ve made that sacrifice for us as a country, we have no excuse but to end galamsey.”

Visibly moved, Vanderpuye stressed that the nation must treat the loss of such patriots as a turning point in the fight against environmental destruction.

“I wish I had the authority; it would be war. We can’t lose these people and still allow others to remain in the forests and rivers, destroying our environment,” he added.

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, and Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s New York Field Office, Christopher G. Raia, have announced the unsealing of an indictment charging four Ghanaian nationals in connection with an international criminal organisation accused of stealing more than $100 million through romance scams and business email compromises.


The defendants – Isaac Oduro Boateng (also known as “Kofi Boat”), Inusah Ahmed (also known as “Pascal”), Derrick Van Yeboah (also known as “Van”), and Patrick Kwame Asare (also known as “Borgar”) – allegedly played leading roles in the scheme.

Ghana has extradited Boateng, Ahmed, and Van Yeboah to the United States, where they arrived on August 7, 2025. They will appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger. Asare remains at large. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian.

“As alleged, Isaac Oduro Boateng, Inusah Ahmed, Derrick van Yeboah, and Patrick Kwame Asare led and participated in an international fraud ring that engaged in a massive conspiracy to defraud vulnerable people and steal from businesses,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. “Offshore scammers should know that we, the FBI, and our law enforcement partners will work around the world to combat online fraud and bring perpetrators to justice.”

“The defendants have been brought to the United States to be held accountable for their alleged roles in scamming companies and vulnerable Americans out of over $100 million,” said FBI Assistant Director in Charge Christopher G. Raia. 

“Deceiving businesses using email compromise campaigns and tricking innocent elderly victims through fraudulent companionship in order to exploit their trust and finances is not merely appalling but illegal. The FBI will continue to ensure anyone who preys on companies and vulnerable Americans online is made to face the criminal justice system.”

## Details of the Allegations

According to the indictment, the four men were high-ranking members of a Ghana-based criminal network that targeted both individuals and businesses across the United States. 

Many victims were elderly men and women deceived into believing they were in online romantic relationships with fictitious identities created by the conspirators. Once trust was established, victims were persuaded to send money or help launder funds from other victims.

The group also carried out business email compromise schemes, deceiving companies into wiring funds directly to accounts controlled by the organisation. The total losses from the scheme exceeded $100 million.

Prosecutors allege that proceeds from these crimes were laundered to West Africa, primarily to individuals known as “chairmen”, who directed the conspiracy’s activities. Both Boateng and Ahmed are said to have held this leadership role.

## Charges and Potential Sentences

Boateng, 36; Ahmed, 40; Van Yeboah, 40; and Asare, 39, all of Ghana, face the following charges:

- One count of wire fraud conspiracy (maximum 20 years in prison)

- One count of wire fraud (maximum 20 years)

- One count of money laundering conspiracy (maximum 20 years)

- One count of conspiracy to receive stolen money (maximum 5 years)

- One count of receipt of stolen money (maximum 10 years)

These maximum penalties are set by Congress and are provided for informational purposes only; sentencing will be determined by a judge if convictions occur.

## International Cooperation

U.S. authorities credited the Government of Ghana for its cooperation in the extradition process. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs worked closely with the International Cooperation Unit of the Office of the Attorney-General of Ghana. 

Significant assistance was also provided by Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office, the Ghana Police Service – INTERPOL, the Cyber Security Authority, and the National Intelligence Bureau.

The case is being prosecuted by the Southern District of New York’s Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kevin Mead and Mitzi Steiner are leading the prosecution.



3 Ghanaian nationals extradited to U.S. over $100m romance scam, fraud scheme

Former Ghana Air Force officer Wing Commander Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor has offered detailed insights into the circumstances that may have led to the recent military helicopter crash near Obuasi, a tragedy that has plunged the nation into mourning.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2026, a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 military helicopter went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.

The fatalities include Minister for Defence Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. 

Others who lost their lives were Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former Member of Parliament; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The three military crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also perished in the crash.

In an exclusive interview with TV3 on Friday, August 8, Wing Commander Sogbodjor emphasised that all aircraft undergo stringent checks before departure and that pilots are trained to abort flights if any safety concerns arise.

“All aeroplanes go through checks. Pilots also do external checks before they take off, and if he sees anything which is not good, he will tell you — he will not fly. No one takes off to go and die,” he explained.

According to Sogbodjor, the crash may have been caused by a loss of power mid-flight.

“The pilot may have been losing power and trying to get the helicopter to get up. Also, because of the aviation kerosene we use, it’s very easy for it to catch fire when there is an impact,” he noted.

He further speculated that the victims might have been incapacitated before the helicopter burst into flames.

“I have a feeling by the time it hit the tree and hit the ground, they may have been in a comatose situation, else they would have tried to crawl out. It [the helicopter] bursts out in flames when it hits an object,” he said.

The retired officer also questioned how the helicopter could have come into contact with a tree, given Ghana’s terrain.

“I don’t think we have any tree which is 1,000 or 2,000 feet in Ghana. The topography from Accra to Obuasi is also known. I think what we need to find out is what happened for the aircraft to have come down for the rotor to touch or hit a tree,” he remarked.

Sogbodjor outlined standard pre-flight and in-flight procedures, noting that pilots meticulously plan their routes, altitude, and weather assessments with air traffic control before takeoff.

“Pilots conduct an external inspection, then once you enter the cockpit, you do a pre-start check. Then you start the engine, after which you accept that the plane is good enough to fly. You talk to the control tower and plan your flight, your route, your height, and weather conditions, and then the tower gives you clearance to take off,” he said.

He expressed confidence that investigators would identify the cause of the crash, highlighting the critical role of the aircraft’s voice recorder.

“The voice recorder will record all communication between the pilots and the control centre. The parameters of the site are also monitored before the crash. So these will give us a sense of what happened,” he explained.

Sogbodjor added that Ghana possesses the expertise to handle such investigations.

“The procedure they should go through is there. We have lost aircraft before, and these have been investigated. They [the Investigative Board] can handle it. We have people who can determine what happened from beginning to end,” he concluded.

Retired Air Force officer reveals possible cause of Ghana military helicopter crash

As the nation grapples with the devastating loss of eight lives in a recent helicopter crash, former President John Agyekum Kufuor has offered a deeply personal reflection — recounting a chilling near-miss during his presidency that nearly ended in tragedy over the vast Sahara Desert in 2007.

Reflecting on the incident, which occurred during an official trip to Libya, Mr Kufuor recounted the distressing moments aboard a flight transporting him and a delegation of approximately 12 to 16 individuals from Tripoli to Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.

“I remember that sometime in 2007, had it not been for God’s intervention, I would have been involved in a plane crash over the Sahara Desert,” he shared in an interview on Angel TV.

He recalled that shortly after taking off from a meeting with the late Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, the aircraft began to experience technical difficulties.

“All of a sudden, over the desert, the plane could not ascend. It had become heavy, and for almost 30 minutes, it refused to gain altitude. When you looked down, all you could see was the desert. Eeeii! What was about to happen to us here?” he reflected, painting a vivid picture of the looming danger.

The situation onboard grew even more alarming due to the silence from the cockpit.

“The pilot remained silent, not communicating anything to us,” Kufuor said, recalling the unsettling quiet that added to passengers’ growing fears.

He further described the tension among those on board as cabin crew began rearranging luggage, adding to the sense of uncertainty.

In a bid to avert catastrophe, the pilot opted to divert the flight path. 

“The plane managed to manoeuvre and made a turn to align over the Mediterranean Sea, although it was still struggling to fly at a higher altitude for nearly an hour before we finally landed in Tripoli,” he explained.

The seriousness of the situation became undeniable upon landing.

“As we were landing, we noticed fire tenders and security vehicles speeding across the airport tarmac. That was when the pilot confirmed that the plane couldn’t fly any higher, so he had to return to Tripoli,”  he recounted.

President Kufuor acknowledged the perils tied to high-level travel, particularly within the context of international diplomacy.

“I have witnessed something like this before,” he stated, reflecting on the inherent risks.

The delegation were compelled to spend the night in Tripoli while arrangements were made for an alternative aircraft to continue their mission.

Amid national mourning following the recent helicopter tragedy, the former president’s personal account serves as a sobering reminder of the ever-present dangers that come with official duties. His experience underscores the need for stringent aviation safety measures and clear communication during emergencies.
