China has sentenced former Nanjing city official Yang Youlin to death after finding him guilty of accepting more than 2.2 billion yuan ($325 million) in bribes over a 30-year period, making it one of the country's largest corruption cases in recent years.

The 69-year-old was also convicted of embezzlement, abuse of power and money laundering. According to Chinese state media, Yang used his positions in Nanjing between 1993 and 2023 to help individuals and companies obtain engineering contracts, land deals and financing opportunities in exchange for cash and valuable gifts.

A court in Changzhou ruled that Yang's crimes were "extremely serious" and had caused substantial losses to the interests of both the state and the public.

The court noted that the scale of the offences and their impact justified the harshest punishment under Chinese law.

Yang's conviction comes amid Chinese President Xi Jinping's long-running anti-corruption campaign, which has targeted officials across government institutions, the military and the financial sector.

While the campaign has been widely presented as an effort to combat corruption, critics have argued that it has also been used to sideline political opponents.

Death sentences for financial and corruption-related crimes remain uncommon in China, although they are occasionally imposed in cases involving exceptionally large sums.

Former financial regulator Lai Xiaomin was executed in 2021 after being convicted of taking 1.8 billion yuan in bribes, while former Inner Mongolia official Li Jianping was executed in 2024 for corruption offences involving more than 3 billion yuan.

Although Yang reportedly cooperated with investigators and provided assistance to authorities, the court said the severity of his crimes outweighed any mitigating factors.

It concluded that his cooperation was insufficient to justify a reduced sentence, resulting in the death penalty being upheld.
