CID Probes viral video of American woman alleging kidnapping by ‘fake police’ in Accra

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a viral video in which an American national, Arianna Naomi Mackey, claims she was kidnapped and robbed by five masked men posing as police officers at a snap checkpoint in Accra.
According to the CID, preliminary findings show that the video was filmed at a hotel in Accra where Mackey and two companions were lodging.
Police confirmed that the group checked out of the hotel on December 5, 2025, and that Mackey departed Ghana the same day through the Kotoka International Airport.

However, investigators say efforts to obtain detailed information from the alleged victim have been difficult.
Mackey reportedly told police she could not recall the names of the supposed officers or the licence number of the vehicle involved.
She also refused to provide contact details of a friend who was allegedly with her during the incident, saying the friend was unwilling to participate in the inquiry.
The CID added that the viral video has since been removed from Mackey’s social media account, and several attempts to reach her through WhatsApp calls and messages have been unsuccessful.
Officers are now exploring diplomatic channels to secure her cooperation.
Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, emphasised that the Ghana Police Service takes such allegations seriously and is committed to establishing the truth behind the claims.
