The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority has announced a nationwide exercise to replace a batch of defective 2026 vehicle number plates after internal quality checks uncovered durability concerns.

According to the Authority, routine inspections revealed that some embossed number plates failed to meet the required standards, causing printed characters and markings to fade earlier than expected.

In an official statement released on Monday, April 27, the DVLA confirmed that the affected batch was immediately withdrawn from circulation once the defect was detected. However, some of the plates had already been issued to motorists before the problem was identified.

The Authority has therefore invited all affected vehicle owners to visit any DVLA office across the country for a free replacement of the faulty number plates.

The DVLA apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused and accepted responsibility for the issue. It also assured the public that corrective measures are being implemented to avoid similar incidents in the future.

As part of the response, the authority said it is strengthening its quality control and assurance systems to guarantee safe, reliable, and high-standard vehicle registration services nationwide.

Motorists with recently issued 2026 number plates are encouraged to check with the nearest DVLA branch for guidance on the replacement process.
