Farmer jailed 18 years for defiling 8-year-old

A 38-year-old farmer, Haruna Mohammed, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Nkawie Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region for defiling an eight-year-old girl.
Mohammed pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement of a child under 16 and was convicted based on his own plea.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Frank Acheampong, who prosecuted the case, told the court, presided over by Mr Robert Addo, that the complainant, Christiana Serwaah, a trader, and her daughter, the victim, lived in the same neighbourhood as the convict at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District.

According to the prosecution, in December 2025, the victim was admitted to the hospital on three occasions, although the underlying cause of her illness was initially unknown.
On February 5, 2026, the victim disclosed to her sister that Haruna Mohammed had sexually abused her, prompting the complainant to be informed.
When the complainant, together with other community members, confronted Mohammed, he admitted to the abuse and instructed them to take the victim to the hospital, offering to cover the medical expenses.

Following further investigations, he was formally charged and brought before the Nkawie Circuit Court, where he was ultimately sentenced to serve 18 years in prison.
