A heritage train owned by Ghanaian creative artist and author Ibrahim Mahama has been destroyed by fire following an incident in the Northern Region on Wednesday, February 18.

Mr Mahama confirmed the development in a Facebook post on Thursday, February 19, describing the loss as a “tragic misfortune". He indicated that the blaze was caused by sparks generated during ongoing repair works on the train.

“Yesterday [February 18], we had the tragic misfortune of losing one of our trains to fire due to sparks from ongoing repairs. Certainly, I am sure if a lot more care had been taken, this could have been prevented,” he wrote.

According to him, the train was among the most challenging pieces in his collection to secure, having been acquired nearly two years ago. He explained that due to the significant rust it had accumulated over time, it had been scheduled as the last unit to undergo body restoration works.

The locomotive formed part of Ghana’s oldest railway stock, which is no longer operational. It had been purchased as part of Mr Mahama’s broader efforts to preserve and repurpose historical railway assets as cultural and artistic heritage.

Despite the extent of the damage, he confirmed that no casualties were recorded.

“No one was injured, thankfully. Our hearts may be broken, but our spirits are as high as ever,” he stated.

Mr Mahama also expressed appreciation to the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift response, as well as to members of the local community who assisted during the incident.

He concluded by urging the public to remain vigilant, particularly during the dry season, to help prevent fire outbreaks and safeguard both public and private property.
