Former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe Attionu has been extradited from the United States to Ghana to begin serving a 10-year prison sentence after being convicted on more than 70 corruption-related charges.

The U.S. Embassy in Accra confirmed the extradition on June 9, describing it as a landmark moment in Ghana-U.S. law enforcement cooperation – and notably the first such transfer between the two countries since 2009, ending a 16-year gap.

The Conviction

Attionu, who served as MASLOC CEO under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, was found guilty by the Accra High Court in 2024 on multiple counts spanning stealing, conspiracy, financial loss to the state, and money laundering. The offences were committed between 2013 and 2016 and involved the embezzlement of over $6 million in Ghanaian taxpayer funds.

The court sentenced her to 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

Her convictions break down as follows:

A Milestone in Ghana-US Cooperation

The U.S. Embassy said the extradition underscores the strength of the bilateral law enforcement partnership between Ghana and the United States and signals that individuals convicted of corruption offences cannot simply evade justice by relocating abroad.

Anti-corruption advocates have welcomed the development as a significant step toward entrenching accountability in Ghana's public service. Analysts say the case delivers a clear warning to public officials: conviction does not end at the border.

What It Means

Attionu's return is expected to reignite national debate on the recovery of stolen public funds and the effectiveness of Ghana's anti-corruption institutions. With the case now reaching its final chapter, pressure is likely to grow on authorities to pursue outstanding assets and ensure full restitution to the state.

The Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu extradition stands as one of the most consequential corruption enforcement actions in Ghana's recent history – and a marker of how far international legal cooperation has come in holding public officials to account.
