Ghana MP Kwame Ohene Frimpong detained in Amsterdam

Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has reportedly been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, and shared on the official platforms of the Parliament of Ghana.

The statement did not provide details regarding the circumstances surrounding the detention but noted that parliamentary leadership is currently engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather more information.

“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon. Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. The Rt Hon. Speaker and the leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement said.

Kwame Ohene Frimpong won the Asante Akyem North parliamentary seat as an independent candidate during the December 7, 2024, general elections.

He secured victory with 26,926 votes, defeating former New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, who polled 8,933 votes, while National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Kofi Asamoah obtained 2,469 votes.
