Ghana opens borders with visa-free travel for all Africans by May 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will implement a visa-free policy for all African nationals travelling to the country, in a significant step toward strengthening continental integration.
The policy is expected to take effect on May 25, 2026, to coincide with the celebration of Africa Day.
The announcement was made during a state visit by Zimbabwe’s president, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
President Mahama explained that the initiative forms part of a broader effort to position Ghana as a leading centre for Pan-Africanism while opening up new opportunities in tourism, trade, and economic collaboration across the continent.

According to him, the visa-free policy will be supported by a wider digital transformation agenda, including the introduction of an e-visa system scheduled to be rolled out next month.
“I’m also pleased to announce that effective 25th May 2026, when we commemorate Africa Day, Ghana will commence a free visa regime for all Africans. Africans travelling to Ghana will receive their e-visas online free of charge.
“But between Ghana and Zimbabwe, we have a visa-free environment already. You can travel to each other’s countries without needing a visa. You just hop onto the plane and arrive in each other’s country,” he said.
The president further indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will intensify efforts to secure additional visa waiver agreements to improve travel access for Ghanaian passport holders across Africa.

The Bigger Picture president,
The policy is expected to yield several benefits. It will ease the movement of people across borders, boost tourist arrivals, and make Ghana a more attractive destination for investors. A
Additionally, it is likely to enhance intra-African trade by reducing travel restrictions for businesspeople, in line with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area. The move also promotes cultural exchange and strengthens regional cooperation, reinforcing Ghana’s role as a gateway for African unity and economic growth.
Meanwhile, Ghana and Zimbabwe have signed 10 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation across key sectors.
