The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country today, Friday, July 3, 2026, with northern Ghana expected to experience the most significant weather activity.

According to GMet's latest 18-hour weather outlook, the Upper West, Upper East, Northeast, Savannah and Northern regions are likely to experience thunderstorms of varying intensity as rain-bearing clouds continue to develop across the area.

The agency has also warned that an active rainstorm currently moving across Nigeria is expected to drift westward later in the day, bringing additional rainfall and thunderstorm activity to parts of northern Ghana and the transition belt.

Southern Ghana to Experience Rain and Afternoon Thunderstorms

Residents in southern Ghana should expect light rain or drizzle during the early hours of the day, followed by thunderstorms and scattered showers in the afternoon and evening.

Several major cities, including Accra, Kasoa, Winneba, Ho, Koforidua, Kumasi, Sunyani, Techiman, Tamale, Bolgatanga, Wa and Yendi, are forecast to experience rainfall or thunderstorms at various times throughout the day.

GMet says weather conditions will remain mostly cloudy in many areas, with thunderstorms likely to intensify later in the afternoon.

Temperatures to Range Between 22°C and 34°C.

Despite the expected rainfall, temperatures are forecast to remain relatively warm across the country.

Maximum temperatures are expected to range from 30°C to 34°C, while minimum temperatures will be between 22°C and 23°C across the coastal, forest, transition and northern sectors.

Northern Ghana is expected to record some of the highest temperatures before thunderstorms develop later in the day.

GMet Issues Weather Alert for Northern and Transition Belts

GMet's impact-based forecast has placed parts of the northern and transition zones under a "Be Aware" weather risk level due to the likelihood of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

While most areas of the country remain under low-risk conditions, residents in affected regions are being urged to stay alert and monitor weather updates throughout the day.

The agency has also cautioned that sea conditions will remain rough and has advised fishermen, sailors and other marine operators to exercise extra care while at sea.

Public Advised to Take Precautions

Authorities are encouraging residents to remain informed through official weather updates and take the necessary safety precautions.

The public has been advised to avoid flood-prone areas during periods of heavy rainfall, seek shelter during thunderstorms, and remain vigilant against lightning strikes, strong winds and other severe weather conditions.

With thunderstorms expected across large parts of the country, GMet says staying informed and planning ahead will be key to ensuring safety throughout the day.
