Government to introduce 20% rural posting allowance for teachers in deprived communities

The government has announced plans to introduce a 20% rural posting allowance for teachers working in rural and deprived communities as part of efforts to improve teacher welfare, boost motivation and address staffing shortages in underserved areas.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, July 2, Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu said the proposed allowance is designed to attract, motivate and retain teachers in hard-to-reach communities while compensating them for the challenges associated with serving in such locations.
According to the minister, enhancing teacher welfare remains a key priority for the government as it seeks to improve educational outcomes and strengthen the teaching profession across the country.
"Government is committed to rolling out a 20 per cent rural posting allowance for teachers serving in rural and deprived areas, and the Ministry of Finance, the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education are working towards its implementation," Mr Iddrisu stated.
Study Leave Eligibility Reduced for Rural Teachers
The Education Minister also announced a significant policy change regarding study leave with pay for teachers in deprived communities.

Under the new arrangement, the qualifying period for study leave with pay has been reduced from three years to two years for teachers serving in rural and underserved areas.
Mr Iddrisu explained that teachers who voluntarily accept postings to deprived communities will now be eligible to apply for study leave with pay after completing two years of service.
"Originally, it was three years if you were serving in a deprived area. We have now reduced it to two years. Any teacher who self-posts to a rural deprived area can apply for study leave with pay after two years of service," he said.
Government Targets Housing Challenges Through Teacher Dabre Initiative
The government is also seeking to address accommodation challenges faced by teachers in rural communities through the implementation of President John Dramani Mahama's proposed Teacher Dabre Initiative.
According to the minister, the programme, which was outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto, aims to provide decent accommodation for teachers in rural areas to improve deployment and retention.

"We are currently engaging stakeholders on the implementation of the Teacher Dabre Initiative, which will provide accommodation for teachers in rural communities and help address housing challenges that often affect teacher deployment and retention," he explained.
New School Infrastructure Projects to Include Teacher Housing
As part of broader efforts to improve conditions for teachers, Mr Iddrisu revealed that all newly awarded school infrastructure contracts will now be required to include accommodation facilities for teachers.
He added that the government remains committed to investing in the continuous professional development and capacity building of teachers nationwide.
The latest measures form part of ongoing efforts to improve teacher welfare, strengthen the education sector and ensure quality education delivery across Ghana, particularly in rural and deprived communities where teacher retention remains a major challenge.
