The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana have announced a 20 percent increase in public transport fares across the country, effective Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

According to the transport operators, the decision has been driven by the continuous rise in fuel prices and the escalating cost of vehicle spare parts, which they say has significantly increased the cost of running transport businesses.

In a statement issued on Saturday, May 30, the operators explained that key components such as tires, engine oil, batteries, and other essential consumables have seen sharp price increases in recent months, placing severe financial pressure on drivers and vehicle owners.

The new fares will apply to all forms of public transport, including intra-city trotro services, inter-city transport, and shared taxi operations nationwide.

To ensure smooth implementation, the unions said updated fare charts will be displayed at various lorry stations ahead of the effective date, urging passengers to confirm official rates and avoid overcharging.

They further cautioned drivers and their assistants against charging beyond the approved 20 percent increment, warning that enforcement teams, in collaboration with the Police MTTD, will monitor compliance and sanction offenders.

The unions also called on government to reduce taxes on spare parts and introduce measures to stabilize fuel prices, arguing that such interventions are necessary to ease pressure on operators and ensure affordable, reliable transport services for commuters.
