In a major royal shake-up, King Charles has formally initiated the process to strip Prince Andrew of all royal titles, styles, and honours, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

The Duke of York will now be referred to as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and is set to vacate his long-time residence at the Royal Lodge in Windsor.

The palace revealed that the decision was made with the full backing of the Prince of Wales and that Andrew did not contest the move.

The action comes amid growing concern within the royal household over the reputational damage caused by ongoing reports linking Andrew to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegations from Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s victims.

This development follows the release of excerpts from Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, published by The Guardian, in which she made new claims about her encounters with Andrew. Though the prince has consistently denied any wrongdoing, he previously reached an out-of-court settlement with Giuffre in 2022, reportedly worth £12 million, without admitting liability.

Buckingham Palace’s statement confirmed that Andrew will lose the titles of Prince, Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, Baron Killyleagh, and the style His Royal Highness, along with honours such as the Order of the Garter and the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

His lease at the Royal Lodge, which had provided legal protection for his residence, has been revoked, and he will relocate to private accommodation on the Sandringham estate, personally funded by the King.

“Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor,” the palace said. “Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.”

The King’s statement also expressed “deep sympathy for victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse,” reinforcing a stance of accountability and compassion within the monarchy.

Giuffre’s family responded by declaring her actions a victory, stating that she had “brought down a British prince with her truth and extraordinary courage.”

Political figures across the UK and abroad have praised King Charles for his decisive move. UK ministers described the decision as “brave and necessary”, while U.S. Congressman Suhas Subramanyam renewed his call for Andrew to testify about his knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.

Though the move is seen as an unprecedented step in modern royal history, it underscores the King’s determination to protect the credibility and integrity of the monarchy. As Andrew prepares to leave Windsor for Sandringham, his future remains uncertain, but what is clear is that the royal family is drawing a firm line between duty and disgrace.
