Mahama swears in Dr Pamela Graham as Auditor General

President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in Dr Pamela Graham as Ghana's new auditor-general, charging her to uphold the highest standards of integrity, independence and professionalism in protecting the country's public resources.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Presidency on Thursday, July 2, President Mahama underscored the critical role of the Auditor-General in strengthening public trust, promoting financial discipline and ensuring accountability in the management of state resources.
According to the president, the responsibilities of the auditor-general go beyond auditing government accounts and play a vital role in safeguarding the nation's democratic and governance structures.
"The work of the auditor-general extends far beyond auditing accounts. It strengthens confidence in public institutions, promotes prudent financial management, deters waste and corruption, and provides Parliament and the people of Ghana with assurance that public resources are being used responsibly," President Mahama stated.
Auditor-General's Role Key to Strengthening Public Trust
President Mahama noted that the auditor-general's office has become even more important at a time when citizens are demanding greater transparency, accountability and efficiency from public institutions.
Expressing confidence in Dr Graham's leadership, he cited her extensive professional experience, expertise and commitment to public service as qualities that make her well-suited for the position.
The president reminded the new auditor-general that her primary responsibility is to serve the Constitution and the people of Ghana.

"As you assume office today, you do so not in service to any government, political party or individual, but in service to the Constitution and the people of Ghana," he said.
He further stressed that the independence of the auditor-general's office is essential to maintaining public confidence in governance and urged Dr Graham to be guided by facts, evidence and the rule of law in carrying out her duties.
Mahama Highlights Importance of Accountability in Economic Recovery
President Mahama linked effective auditing and financial oversight to the government's broader economic transformation agenda.
He explained that efforts to restore macroeconomic stability, improve domestic revenue mobilisation, expand infrastructure, boost exports and implement the government's flagship 24-Hour Economy policy all depend on transparent and prudent management of public funds.
The president also reminded public officials and institutions that accountability is a constitutional requirement rather than a matter of choice.
"Every ministry, department and agency; every metropolitan, municipal and district assembly; every state-owned enterprise and every public official must recognise that accountability is not optional; it is a constitutional obligation," he emphasised.
Government to Strengthen Ghana Audit Service
President Mahama reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening the Ghana Audit Service through investments in technology, digital transformation, staff training and institutional reforms.

He also called on government agencies, public institutions and state-owned enterprises to fully cooperate with the auditor-general and ensure that audit recommendations are implemented promptly.
According to him, audit reports should not merely fulfil statutory requirements but should serve as practical tools for improving governance, strengthening internal controls and eliminating inefficiencies within public institutions.
Dr Pamela Graham Charged to Protect the Institution's Legacy
Addressing Dr Graham directly, President Mahama urged her to preserve and build upon the strong reputation established by previous leaders of the institution.
"You inherit an institution whose credibility has been built over decades through professionalism and fidelity to the Constitution. Your duty is to preserve, strengthen and modernise that legacy," he stated.
The president expressed confidence that Dr Graham's tenure would further strengthen public trust in state institutions, enhance accountability and protect the interests of Ghanaian taxpayers.
He concluded by stressing that strong institutions remain the foundation of every successful democracy and that the auditor-general's office plays a crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability and good governance in Ghana.
