Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena installed as Kristo Asafo leader amid court dispute and family tensions

Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena has officially been installed as the new leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission, marking a significant transition in the leadership of one of Ghana’s most influential religious organisations.
The installation ceremony was held on Sunday, June 21, at his residence, despite ongoing legal challenges and growing controversy surrounding the church's succession process following the death of its founder, Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo.
The development comes at a time of heightened tension within the Kristo Asafo family and the wider church community.

Hours before the installation, former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, reportedly came under attack when gunmen allegedly opened fire on her vehicle near the residence of her younger brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena.
Reports indicate that the former legislator sustained minor injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, although some reports have alleged that the attackers were linked to supporters of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena. No official confirmation has been provided by the Ghana Police Service.
The installation also proceeded despite an ongoing court case seeking to halt the succession process. Two senior members of the Kristo Asafo Mission recently filed a suit at the High Court in Accra, challenging the legitimacy of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena’s appointment as leader of the church.
The plaintiffs contend that amendments made to the church's constitution in 2024 altered the succession framework and disqualified him from assuming the position. They argue that although he had previously been designated as successor under an earlier arrangement, the revised constitution supersedes those provisions.

As a result, they are seeking legal orders to prevent his installation and recognition as leader of the church.
Legacy of Apostle Kwadwo Safo
Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo, founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission and the Kantanka Group, passed away in September 2025.
Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most accomplished inventors, industrialists and religious leaders, he was celebrated for championing indigenous technology, innovation and automobile manufacturing through the Kantanka brand.
His passing marked the end of an era and set the stage for the ongoing succession battle over the future leadership of the Kristo Asafo Mission.
