Nationwide power outage hits Ghana as GRIDCo confirms system disturbance

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed that a major power system disturbance triggered widespread electricity outages across parts of the country in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m, when the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a disturbance that caused several power generation plants to trip simultaneously, disrupting electricity supply across the national grid.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, GRIDCo said it had immediately activated its established power system restoration procedures to restore electricity to affected areas as quickly and safely as possible.
"Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders, to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety," the company stated.
GRIDCo also disclosed that a comprehensive technical investigation has been launched to establish the exact cause of the system disturbance.
The company assured the public that it remains committed to restoring electricity supply to all affected customers while ensuring the safety and stability of the national grid.

"We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate the patience and understanding of the public during this period. We remain fully committed to restoring supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible and will provide further updates as more information becomes available," the statement added.
The latest outage comes as engineers continue efforts to maintain the stability of Ghana's electricity transmission network. Further updates are expected once investigations into the cause of the disturbance are completed.
