Pilot arrested for flying over 900 flights for 17 years with fake licence

A former Air Canada pilot is facing criminal charges after allegedly captaining more than 900 domestic and international flights over nearly 17 years — without ever holding the proper licence required to do so.

Canadian police announced on Tuesday that Geoffrey Wall was arrested on June 1 following a complex fraud investigation that uncovered one of the most audacious deceptions in aviation history.

What He Did and How Long He Got Away With It

Wall worked as a pilot at Air Canada for 27 years and held a commercial pilot licence throughout his career. However, investigators say that when he was promoted to captain in 2009, he never obtained the Airline Transport Pilot Licence for Aeroplanes — known as an ATPL-A — which is a mandatory requirement for anyone flying as pilot in command.

Despite not holding the correct licence, Wall went on to captain over 900 flights between 2009 and 2025, piloting Boeing 767, 777, and 787 aircraft and carrying tens of thousands of passengers. During that period, he earned close to $3 million Canadian dollars – equivalent to more than $2 million US dollars.

Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Milinovich did not mince his words when describing the scale of what had allegedly taken place.

"This investigation and the details surrounding it read like a movie script," he said at a news conference in Ontario. "(Wall) rose to the position of pilot in command, where for almost 17 years they flew Boeing 767s, 777s, and 787s."

To put the deception in context, Milinovich drew a sharp analogy: "This is very similar to a doctor that is licensed to practise family medicine but is doing brain surgery in their office. There are additional requirements and regulations to professional designations that exist for a reason."

How He Was Caught

Wall's deception unravelled in 2025 when a routine examination of his credentials revealed anomalies within his pilot licence documentation. Air Canada notified regulators, triggering both a regulatory and a criminal investigation — codenamed 'Project Icarus' — which was formally launched in January 2026.

Wall had already retired from Air Canada in 2025, before the investigation got underway.

Air Canada's Response

Air Canada moved quickly to address public concern over passenger safety, insisting that its internal training processes had ensured flights remained safe throughout the period in question.

"Safety was not compromised by this incident because all pilots at Air Canada undergo mandatory recurrent training every six months to validate their flying competency, including a flight check with a certified Transport Canada check-pilot every 12 months," the airline said in a statement.

However, the carrier was equally clear that the breach itself was unacceptable. "Appropriate licensing is an essential layer of the airline industry's multi-layered approach to safety, so Air Canada takes this matter with utmost seriousness," the statement added, as quoted by CNN.

Police say Wall misrepresented his qualifications to both his employer and the aviation regulator throughout his time as captain.

The Charges

Wall now faces seven criminal charges, including fraud over $5,000, two counts of uttering forged documents, and three counts of possession of a counterfeit mark. He has also been fined by Transport Canada. He is due to appear in court on June 29, 2026.

The case has drawn widespread comparisons to the 2002 film Catch Me If You Can, in which a teenager successfully impersonates an airline pilot – a story that was itself based on real events. In Wall's case, the alleged deception lasted far longer, involved real passengers on real intercontinental flights, and ended not with a Hollywood ending but with a court date.
