Railway workers union threatens strike Sept 30 over 12-month salary arrears

The Railway Workers Union of Ghana has issued a formal notice of strike and picketing slated for September 30, 2025, should the Ghana Railway Company Limited fail to settle 12 months of outstanding salaries dating back to October 2024.

In a letter addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service on September 15, 2025, the union stated that the prolonged salary arrears have plunged its members into dire hardship.

The situation, it noted, has resulted in financial distress, broken homes, health complications such as strokes, disruption of children’s education, and widespread frustration.

The union lamented that despite several engagements with the Ministry of Transport and other relevant bodies, no meaningful steps have been taken to resolve the matter.

It further accused the authorities of neglecting to activate lawful dispute resolution mechanisms such as negotiation, mediation, or arbitration as outlined under Section 161 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).

Copies of the notice were also sent to the National Labour Commission, the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Jobs, the Ghana Railway Development Authority, the Trades Union Congress, and Parliament’s Select Committee on Transport.

The union has warned that if no concrete measures are taken by September 22, 2025, it will invoke its rights under Sections 160 and 171 of the Labour Act to proceed with industrial action.

The planned strike will see workers from Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa participating. Their programme of action includes picketing at the Ministry of Transport in Accra, submitting a petition to Parliament, visiting the Ghana Railway Development Authority, and concluding at the Trades Union Congress headquarters.

The union emphasised that the protest would be conducted peacefully and in compliance with public order regulations, while also requesting police support to ensure security.

This development follows a similar episode in May 2025, when railway workers embarked on an indefinite strike over seven months of unpaid wages, which crippled passenger services nationwide.

Although that strike was suspended after government intervention, the union insists that the core issues remain unresolved.
