Tamale to receive 30m gallons of water under new project – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to begin the Tamale and Yendi water system projects as part of government efforts to improve access to clean and reliable water in the Northern Region.
The projects are expected to deliver about 30 million gallons of water daily to the Tamale metropolis and nearby communities, while additional small-town water systems will also be developed across the region.
President Mahama made the announcement on Friday, May 15, 2026, during a courtesy visit by chiefs from the Northern Region at the Jubilee House.
According to the president, the government is now entering the procurement phase of the projects, which are expected to significantly improve water supply and infrastructure in northern Ghana.

“We’re moving to the procurement stage – the Tamale and Yendi water systems,” President Mahama stated.
He explained that the Tamale water project will involve the construction of a new pumping station at Yapei on the White Volta to boost water production for the metropolis.
“With the Tamale water system, the intention is to build a new pumping station at Yapei on the White Volta and produce about 30 million gallons of water for the Tamale Metropolis,” he said.
The president further disclosed that Yendi will also benefit from a modern pumping station aimed at ensuring a stable supply of fresh water to residents.

“Yendi will also have a new pumping station to produce fresh water for Yendi. Other small-town water systems are going to happen,” he added.
The planned projects form part of the government’s broader agenda to tackle water supply challenges in Northern Ghana and expand access to essential infrastructure.
Authorities believe the projects will reduce pressure on existing water systems, support population growth, and improve living conditions in Tamale, Yendi, and surrounding communities.
