The University of Cape Coast community is mourning the tragic death of a second-year student who lost his life following a road accident on campus shortly before he was due to sit for an examination.

The deceased, Kweku Mensah, a Level 200 student pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance, was involved in a collision with an Ayalolo bus at around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2026. The accident occurred along the road stretch between the Amissah-Arthur Language Centre and the Sandwich Lecture Theatre on the university campus.

According to preliminary information from authorities, Mensah was reportedly on his way to Oguaa Hall to retrieve his identification card, which was required for him to gain access to his examination hall. He was riding a motorcycle through the campus when the unfortunate collision occurred.

The impact left him critically injured, prompting an immediate emergency response. Bystanders and first responders quickly transported him to the University of Cape Coast Hospital, where medical personnel made urgent efforts to save his life. However, despite their attempts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the facility.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the university community. In an official statement released on Friday, the university administration confirmed the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

The campus police unit, working together with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash. Authorities have indicated that Mensah’s body has been placed at the UCC mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination and other required procedures.

The university has also confirmed that the student’s family has been informed of the tragedy and is receiving support from the institution during this difficult time.

“The university extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and urges the university community to remain calm as investigations continue,” the statement noted.

The incident has once again sparked discussions about road safety on the university campus, particularly the challenges associated with the movement of motorcycles, public transport vehicles, and pedestrians during busy academic periods.

University authorities have assured the public that further information will be provided as investigations progress and more details become available.
