Xenophobia: Ghana registers over 15,000 citizens in South Africa

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, has revealed that more than 15,000 Ghanaians have so far been registered in South Africa as authorities step up efforts to account for citizens amid growing concerns over xenophobic attacks in parts of the country.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, May 12, Mr. Quashie said the ongoing registration exercise has uncovered a significantly higher number of Ghanaians living in South Africa than previously estimated.
According to him, earlier records suggested that only slightly above 5,000 Ghanaians were residing in the country. However, the current exercise, which began a few months ago, has substantially revised those figures.

“We’ve registered close to 15,000. When I took over, what my predecessors indicated was that Ghanaians in South Africa were just a little above 5,000,” he stated.
He explained that the exercise is still ongoing, particularly in hard-to-reach areas and informal settlements where many Ghanaian residents face communication challenges.
“These are places where we have been told there are Ghanaians living in informal settlements, where communication becomes very difficult, and for that, they cannot go on the website or contact us through the WhatsApp numbers provided,” he added.

His comments come in the wake of government’s approval for the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that President John Dramani Mahama had granted approval for the evacuation to ensure the safety of affected Ghanaian citizens.
Mr. Quashie, however, urged Ghanaians in South Africa to remain confident in the state’s support, stressing that Ghana remains committed to protecting the welfare and dignity of its citizens both at home and abroad.
He further noted that Ghana also expects the same level of respect for its citizens abroad as it extends to foreign nationals living within its borders.
