Over one thousand Ghanaians, led by the main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), took to the streets to protest what they described as “state-sponsored harassment and abuse of power” by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

According to the NPP and participants at the demonstration, the government is allegedly using the Ghana Police Service to intimidate party members and individuals who speak out against bad governance.

They further accused the administration of former President John Mahama of being selective in its arrests, an act they believe infringes on citizens’ rights and freedom of speech.

The protest began at the Obra Spot near Kwame Nkrumah Circle and proceeded to the headquarters of the Ghana Police Service and later to the Jubilee House.

At both institutions, the demonstrators presented petitions demanding an end to what they termed as police harassment of party members and ordinary Ghanaians exercising their democratic rights.

By 11:40 a.m., the NPP delegation had successfully presented its petition to the Ghana Police Service.

It was received on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) by COP Dr Sayibu Pabi Gariba, the Director-General in Charge of Technical Services.

At the Jubilee House, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Vice President, Alexander Percival Segbefia, received the petition on behalf of the President.

The NPP stressed that they expect concrete changes following the submission of their petitions.
