Colombia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for only the third time in their history after a disciplined and efficient 1-0 victory over Ghana at Kansas City Stadium.

The South Americans combined clinical finishing with a rock-solid defensive performance to overcome the Black Stars, with Jhon Arias' early strike proving the difference in a match largely controlled by Néstor Lorenzo's side.

Colombia made their dominance count before the quarter-hour mark when Arias finished the first time to put Los Cafeteros ahead. The goal ultimately proved decisive as Ghana struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities throughout the contest.

The Colombians could have extended their advantage before halftime, but missed chances from Kevin Puerta and Luis Díaz, coupled with an outstanding save from Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi to deny Johan Mojica, kept the scoreline at 1-0.

After the break, Colombia remained the more dangerous side and thought they had doubled their lead shortly before the hour mark when Díaz found the net. However, the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside infringement.

Moments later, the Liverpool winger was presented with a golden one-on-one opportunity but failed to beat Ati-Zigi, who once again came to Ghana's rescue with a crucial save.

Despite those missed opportunities, Colombia never looked seriously threatened thanks to their organised defensive structure and dominance in midfield.

The Black Stars endured a frustrating afternoon in front of goal and failed to register a single shot throughout the entire 90 minutes.

The statistics highlighted Colombia's superiority, with the South Americans recording an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.18 compared to Ghana's modest 0.26.

While Ghana battled hard defensively and relied heavily on Ati-Zigi's heroics, they were unable to generate enough attacking momentum to test Colombia's backline.

The victory sends Colombia into the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland in Vancouver as they continue their pursuit of a deep World Cup run.

For Ghana, meanwhile, the defeat marks another painful World Cup exit at the hands of South American opposition, bringing an end to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
