Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup dream ends as Spain beat Portugal to reach quarter-finals

Spain made FIFA World Cup history by becoming the first team to keep six consecutive clean sheets after defeating Portugal 1-0 in a dramatic Round of 16 clash in Dallas. The result ended Portugal's hopes of back-to-back World Cup knockout victories for the first time since 2006 and could mark the end of Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career.
Spain started brightly, with Mikel Oyarzabal and Lamine Yamal testing Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa early on. Ronaldo also had an opportunity to open the scoring, but his effort from a tight angle was comfortably saved by Unai Simón.

Despite Spain enjoying most of the possession and creating the better chances, Portugal nearly took the lead before half-time when Nuno Mendes struck the crossbar after a well-worked corner routine.
The second half remained evenly contested, with both sides struggling to find a breakthrough. Spain continued to apply pressure through Pedri, Yamal and Dani Olmo, while Portugal threatened on the counter-attack through Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha.

With extra time looming, Spain finally found the decisive moment in stoppage time. Substitute Mikel Merino timed his run perfectly to meet Ferran Torres' through ball before calmly slotting past Costa to send La Roja into the quarter-finals.
Portugal pushed for a late equaliser, but Spain's resolute defence held firm to secure another clean sheet and a historic victory. The win also marked the second time Spain has beaten Portugal 1-0 in a World Cup Round of 16 match, having achieved the same feat on their way to the final in 2010.
