Egypt beat Australia on penalties to reach World Cup last 16 for the first time

Egypt made history by winning their first-ever FIFA World Cup penalty shootout, defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw following extra time to secure a place in the round of 16.
The Pharaohs held their nerve from the spot, with Hossam Abdelmaguid converting the decisive penalty to seal a memorable victory. Egypt was flawless in the shootout, scoring all four of their spot kicks, while Australia missed twice.
Egypt made a bright start and took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour. After a well-worked free-kick routine, Karim Hafez recycled possession and delivered a precise cross for Ashour, whose powerful header beat goalkeeper Patrick Beach.
Australia nearly opened the scoring earlier when Cristian Volpato found space outside the box, but his long-range effort narrowly skimmed over the crossbar.
The Egyptians came close to doubling their advantage immediately after the restart. Omar Marmoush burst through Australia's defense just seconds into the second half but dragged his effort narrowly wide.

That missed opportunity proved costly. In the 55th minute, Aiden O'Neill delivered a dangerous free-kick into the penalty area, and Mohamed Hany inadvertently headed the ball into his own net, levelling the match at 1-1.
It was Hany's second own goal of the tournament and handed Australia a route back into the contest.
Both sides searched for a winner during regulation time, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough.
Egypt came agonizingly close in stoppage time when Patrick Beach produced an outstanding save to deny Ramy Rabia's header before Harry Souttar blocked a follow-up effort from Haissem Hassan.
Two minutes into extra time, Mohamed Salah was presented with a golden opportunity to restore Egypt's lead, but the Liverpool star fired his volley over the bar from a tight angle under pressure.

The penalty shootout ultimately belonged to Egypt. Australia suffered an early setback when Harry Souttar blasted his spot-kick over the crossbar.
Veteran goalkeeper Mat Ryan was introduced specifically for the shootout but was unable to stop any of Egypt's penalties, including a composed chipped effort from Salah, who had entered the game carrying concerns over a hamstring issue.
Australia's hopes faded further when Lucas Herrington, the country's youngest-ever starter in a World Cup knockout match, struck the crossbar with his penalty.
That left Abdelmaguid with the chance to send Egypt through, and he calmly slotted his effort into the bottom corner to spark celebrations among the Egyptian players and fans.
The victory sends Egypt into the World Cup Round of 16 after a resilient display against a determined Australian side. Having remained perfect from the penalty spot and shown remarkable composure under pressure, the Pharaohs continue their impressive tournament run and keep their World Cup dream alive.
