Lucia Kendall marked her first England goal in style as the Lionesses secured a hard-earned 2-0 victory over Ghana at St Mary’s Stadium.

England appeared ready to build on their dominant 8-0 win over China, and Kendall delivered early, striking inside the opening ten minutes. However, despite sustained pressure, Alessia Russo’s stoppage-time penalty proved to be the only other breakthrough, as a determined Black Queens side offered a much tougher defensive test than England faced at Wembley days earlier.

Sarina Wiegman made seven changes to her starting XI, yet the reshuffled side settled quickly. Kendall put England ahead just six minutes in, scoring in front of 20,252 fans in the city where she developed her footballing foundation—a moment that felt dreamlike for the Southampton-born midfielder.

The opener came after Ghana debutant Bénédicte Simon misjudged Chloe Kelly’s delivery into the box, allowing Kendall to react sharply and finish from close range.

England kept the pressure on. Kelly fired over from a Keira Walsh cross, and Ghana goalkeeper Cynthia Conlan produced a smart save to stop Missy Bo Kearns’ central effort. Kelly’s night ended early after she was forced off in the 23rd minute, replaced by Beth Mead, but the Lionesses maintained their dominance. Aggie Beever-Jones carved out a chance but saw her shot deflected and saved.

Just before halftime, Conlan was called upon again, denying Kearns with an excellent stop before Kendall rattled the crossbar with a header from the resulting corner.

The second half followed a similar pattern: England in control, Ghana organised and resilient. Mead’s clever short free-kick on 70 minutes set up Russo, who drew another strong save, while Lauren Hemp headed over moments later from a corner.

Despite waves of pressure, the final ball continued to elude England. Crosses from Hemp and Katie Robinson drifted too close to Conlan, and clear-cut chances remained scarce.

England finally doubled their lead in stoppage time under dramatic circumstances. Russo’s close-range header was blocked in a crowded box, and after a VAR review, Ghana’s Comfort Yeboah was penalised for handball. Russo stepped up and buried the penalty into the bottom-right corner to seal the win.
