The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially relieved Black Stars head coach Otto Addo of his duties, ending his second tenure in charge just hours after Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart.

The decision comes on the back of a disappointing March international break, during which Ghana suffered a heavy 5-1 loss to Austria before falling again to Germany, extending a troubling run of results ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Following the defeat, an emergency meeting was convened involving GFA officials, the Sports Ministry led by Kofi Adams, and the coach, where a swift decision was taken regarding Addo’s future.

In a statement released on Tuesday morning, the GFA confirmed the development:

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.”

The Association also expressed appreciation for his service, stating:

“We sincerely thank Otto Addo for his contribution to the team and wish him the very best in his future endeavours.”

The FA added that a new technical direction for the team will be announced in due course.

Addo returned to the role in 2024 after the Africa Cup of Nations, but his second spell was marked by inconsistency. While he guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 World Cup, he failed to secure a spot at the 2025 AFCON — a significant setback.

Despite achieving World Cup qualification, recent performances – particularly defensive weaknesses and a lack of cohesion – raised serious concerns about the team’s preparedness for the global tournament.

Over the course of his second tenure, Addo recorded eight wins, five draws, and nine defeats in 22 matches. During his initial spell, he managed five wins, three draws, and four losses, leading Ghana to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the team exited at the group stage.

His dismissal means he will not lead the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup in North America, where Ghana are scheduled to face Panama, Croatia, and England in the group stage.

Ghana are set to play Mexico and Wales in May as part of their final preparations, leaving the FA under pressure to appoint a successor quickly and stabilise the team ahead of the tournament.
