South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Adams played in all three of South Africa's group-stage matches at the tournament, helping Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stages for the first time in the nation's history. Their World Cup journey ended in the Round of 32 with a defeat to co-hosts Canada.

The news of his passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from government officials, football authorities and the global football community.

South Africa's Minister for Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his sorrow in a statement, describing Adams as one of the country's brightest football talents.

"It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams.

"South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international."

Police confirmed that an investigation has been launched after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb of central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death.

Minister McKenzie appealed to the public and media to avoid speculation while investigations continue.

"The cause of Jayden's passing has not yet been confirmed. I appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the privacy they need during this incredibly difficult period."

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) also paid tribute, describing Adams' death as a devastating loss to the country.

The union noted that Adams had proudly represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and said his passing had deprived the nation of a gifted footballer with a promising future.

Adams made his senior international debut for South Africa in 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the country's most exciting midfield talents.

Despite the heartbreak of losing his grandmother just hours before South Africa's Group As an opener against the Czech Republic, Adams showed remarkable resilience by starting the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

At club level, Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before completing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.

During his time with the Tshwane-based club, he helped the Brazilians win the South African Premiership title and the CAF Champions League, further cementing his reputation as one of Africa's rising stars.

He was also part of the South Africa squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before earning selection in Hugo Broos' squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino joined the growing list of mourners, expressing condolences to Adams' family and the South African football fraternity.

"It's so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation's historic FIFA World Cup campaign.

"My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and team-mates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace."

Adams' death marks a heartbreaking loss for South African football, with tributes continuing to pour in for a player whose career showed immense promise on both the domestic and international stage.
