The 2026 FIFA World Cup will officially kick off on Thursday, June 11, with a spectacular opening ceremony in Mexico City, setting the tone for what promises to be the biggest World Cup celebration in history.

The event will celebrate football, culture, and music as Mexico becomes the first country to host World Cup matches across three different tournaments.

Organisers say the opening ceremony will blend traditional Mexican heritage with modern entertainment, using the colourful art of papel picado as a key creative symbol.

“This is a powerful way to begin a truly global celebration,” said Gianni Infantino, who described the tournament as a unifying event that brings together nations through football and culture.

Mexico’s ceremony will also launch a trilogy of opening events across the three host nations — Mexico, Canada, and the United States — with additional celebrations planned in Toronto and Los Angeles.

The opening match of the tournament will see Mexico face South Africa in front of a packed stadium expected to host thousands of fans from around the world.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 104 matches across 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States before concluding with the final at New York/New Jersey Stadium on July 19.
