Ghana legend Charles Akonnor has confirmed that he will not be considered for the role of head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) recently parted ways with Otto Addo just over two months before the global tournament. Addo’s dismissal came shortly after a 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart, marking Ghana’s fourth consecutive loss in pre-tournament friendlies, including a 5-1 loss to Austria.

“The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately,” the GFA stated on its official website.

Following Addo’s exit, several names emerged as potential replacements, including the 52-year-old Akonnor, who had previously managed the Black Stars from 2020 to 2021.

Akonnor, a former Black Stars stalwart with 51 caps and 13 goals, has now ruled himself out of contention.

“I am with Gor Mahia. I’m very happy. I’m doing well,” Akonnor told the media following Gor Mahia’s FKF Premier League fixture against Kariobangi Sharks at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

“We are fighting for the title, and that is where my focus is, and so nothing comes before that. I was once the coach of the national team. If there’s a link, it’s not anything negative.

“It’s not anything bad. I’m a Ghanaian. I love my country. I love the national team. I will support them in the World Cup. And that will be it. But for now, my focus is on Gor Mahia.”

Meanwhile, the GFA is expected to finalise the appointment in the coming days as Ghana prepares for upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Wales before opening their World Cup campaign against Panama, England, and Croatia.
