Djiku was initially named in Ghana’s 28-man provisional squad and was expected to play a key role in strengthening the team’s defence. However, concerns about his fitness emerged after he arrived in camp in Cardiff carrying an injury picked up during Spartak Moscow’s Russian Cup final against FC Krasnodar, where he was substituted before his team won on penalties.

Since joining the Black Stars camp, the 28-year-old has been unable to take part in full training sessions, with medical assessments confirming he would not recover in time for the tournament.

As a result, Ghana has decided to rule him out to avoid aggravating the injury. Pafos FC defender Derrick Luckassen has been called up as his replacement to reinforce the squad.

Ghana is in Group L and will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23, and Croatia on June 27 in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
