Morocco are on course for their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 50 years after edging past Nigeria in a tense semi-final, winning 4-2 on penalties in Rabat.

The match was cagey from the outset, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Brahim Díaz flashed an early effort wide for Morocco, while Ademola Lookman’s strike for Nigeria was comfortably saved.

Around the 30-minute mark, Adam Masina had a golden chance in the six-yard box but could not convert, and Díaz sent another attempt off target.

Achraf Hakimi came close with a 22-yard free kick, only for the ball to strike the roof of the net.

Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was tested by a fierce Ismael Saibiari effort, keeping the Atlas Lions at bay.

After a goalless first half, the second period saw both sides probing for an advantage. Raphael Onyedika’s effort for Nigeria went wide, while Abde Ezzalzouli was denied at the other end.

As the minutes ticked by, chances became rare, with neither side willing to leave themselves exposed.

Ezzalzouli had the only other notable attempt before full time, but Nwabali was equal to the strike.

Extra time followed, with Morocco nearly taking the lead through Nayef Aguerd, whose header from a corner struck the outside of the post.

Hamza Igamane’s efforts for Nigeria were also off target, while Neil El Aynaoui’s late long-range strike nearly sealed the match for the hosts.

With neither side able to break the deadlock, a penalty shootout became necessary.

Morocco gained an early advantage after Igamane’s strike was saved, and Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze missed his spot-kick, keeping the scores level.

Both teams traded penalties before Achraf Hakimi converted for Morocco.

Nigeria’s Bruno Onyemaechi was denied by Yassine Bounou, paving the way for Youssef En-Nesyri to seal victory with a decisive and emphatic finish.

Morocco now awaits Senegal in the AFCON 2025 final in Rabat, keeping alive hopes of ending a half-century wait for continental glory.
