Morocco has officially become the first African nation to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a commanding 5-0 victory over 10-man Niger in Rabat.

The Atlas Lions, who made history by reaching the semi-finals of Qatar 2022, needed just three points to qualify from Group E with two matches to spare, following Tanzania’s 1-1 draw against Congo-Brazzaville earlier on Friday.

Niger's Abdoul-Latif Goumey was dismissed in the 26th minute after receiving a second yellow card, and Morocco quickly capitalised.

Ismael Saibari broke the deadlock three minutes later from Youssef Belammari’s cross before doubling the lead just before half-time with an assist from Achraf Hakimi.

Ayoub El Kaabi extended the advantage early in the second half, again from a Belammari delivery.

Substitute Hamza Igamane then netted his first international goal through a cleverly worked corner routine, while Azzedine Ounahi sealed the emphatic win with a curling strike.

The night was even more memorable as Morocco marked their debut match at the newly redeveloped Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium — a venue set to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final and play a key role when the country co-hosts the 2030 World Cup.

With qualification confirmed, Morocco will be joined by eight other group winners in Africa’s qualifying campaign.

Meanwhile, the four best runners-up will enter a playoff for a chance to feature in an intercontinental tournament.
