Paulo Bento emerges as strong contender for Black Stars job

Paulo Bento has emerged as a strong contender for the vacant Ghana national football team coaching role, as the Ghana Football Association steps up efforts to appoint a new manager.

The position became available following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a series of disappointing results in recent international fixtures.

With approximately 70 days left before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the urgency to secure a competent replacement has intensified.

Ghanasoccernet reports indicate that Bento is open to taking up the role, with sources suggesting the experienced Portuguese tactician is eager to return to international management.

The Black Stars have been without a substantive head coach since Addo’s departure, further increasing pressure on the GFA to act swiftly.

Bento brings significant World Cup pedigree, having led the South Korean national football team to the Round of 16 at the 2022 tournament.

His tenure was widely praised for its tactical discipline and structured approach to the game.

The 54-year-old is not new to Ghana’s radar, having been previously considered for the role in 2022.

Despite reports of nearly 600 applications for the position, Bento remains one of the standout candidates under serious consideration.

Another notable name linked to the job is Hervé Renard, although uncertainties surrounding his current situation have reportedly shifted focus more toward Bento within local football circles.

Following his departure from South Korea, Bento held talks with the Poland national football team but did not reach an agreement, with Fernando Santos eventually being appointed.

He later managed the United Arab Emirates national football team from 2023 until March 2025, when he was relieved of his duties after a decline in performance.

Despite that setback, the Ghana job represents a compelling opportunity for Bento to quickly return to the global stage and lead a talented squad into another World Cup campaign.

The final decision now rests with Bento whether to accept a high-pressure, short-term challenge with Ghana or hold out for a more stable long-term project. Meanwhile, the GFA is expected to continue its evaluation process before announcing the next head coach of the Black Stars.
