Paris Saint-Germain delivered a commanding performance to secure a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash at the Parc des Princes, taking a strong advantage into the return leg at Anfield.

PSG were the superior side throughout, controlling the tempo and creating the better chances, while Liverpool struggled to impose themselves in attack and failed to register a single shot on target.

The hosts took the lead in the first half through Désiré Doué, although the goal came with a slice of fortune. His effort took a significant deflection, looping over goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and leaving him helpless. Despite the setback, the Liverpool shot-stopper produced several key saves, including a crucial one-on-one stop to deny Doué a second before the break.

PSG continued their dominance in the second half and doubled their advantage in the 65th minute through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian winger produced a moment of individual brilliance, gliding past defenders before calmly finishing into an unguarded net to cap off a superb attacking move.

The scoreline could have been more emphatic. PSG generated significantly higher expected goals (2.2 to Liverpool’s 0.18), with Ousmane Dembélé also striking the post during the encounter. Liverpool, by contrast, offered little going forward and was largely contained by the French champions.

Defensively, Liverpool faced further scrutiny, particularly involving Ibrahima Konaté. One penalty appeal against him was correctly overturned after a clean challenge on Warren Zaïre-Emery, while another late incident saw him fortunate to escape punishment following a push on Nuno Mendes.

Despite the defeat, Liverpool remain narrowly in the tie, thanks largely to Mamardashvili’s interventions and PSG’s inability to fully capitalise on their dominance. However, they will need a significantly improved performance in the second leg at Anfield if they are to overturn the deficit.
