Every year, millions of people around the world choose to alter, refine, or reimagine their appearance. Some do it for confidence. Some for culture. Some because their neighbour did it, and it looked incredible. Whatever the reason, global cosmetic surgery is booming — with nearly 38 million procedures performed in 2024 alone, up a staggering 42.5% from just four years prior. But which countries are leading the charge? Here, ranked from #10 to #1 by procedures per 1,000 people, are the nations with the highest plastic surgery rates on Earth.

10. Italy — 4.7

Italy may be synonymous with art and beauty, but its citizens don't just admire it — they invest in it. With around 668,784 cosmetic procedures performed in 2021, breast augmentation tops the list, followed by eyelid surgery and lip enhancement. Italy's rigorous medical accreditation standards and competitive pricing make it one of Europe's most active cosmetic surgery markets, drawing both domestic patients and visitors from across the continent.

9. Mexico — 5.31

Mexico performs over 1.27 million cosmetic procedures annually, with liposuction, breast augmentation, and buttock augmentation among the most popular. It is also one of the world's top medical tourism destinations — around 20% of its cosmetic surgery patients travel from abroad, primarily from the United States, drawn by quality care at a fraction of the cost. Mexico's border cities in particular have built thriving cosmetic surgery industries catering to international visitors.

8. Turkey — 5.48

Turkey has transformed itself into one of the world's most sought-after cosmetic surgery hubs. With nearly 950,000 procedures performed annually, it ranks third globally for rhinoplasties alone. A remarkable 32% of its cosmetic surgery patients are medical tourists — mostly from Germany and the UK — lured by world-class surgeons and prices that can be 60–70% lower than in Western Europe. Istanbul, in particular, has become a global capital for hair transplants and nose jobs.

7. Germany — 5.72

Germany has one of the highest per capita plastic surgery rates in Europe, with particular demand for facial and head procedures and breast implants – recording between 271 and 287 such procedures per 100,000 people. A strong economy, high disposable income, and a growing acceptance of aesthetic enhancement have all fuelled demand. Germany is also one of the biggest source markets for medical tourism to Turkey and Eastern Europe.

6. United States — 5.91

The United States is the undisputed world leader in sheer volume, performing over 6.1 million cosmetic procedures in 2024 — roughly 22% of the entire global total. It also has more plastic surgeons than any other country, with around 7,752 practising professionals. While it ranks sixth per capita, the scale of its industry is unmatched. Non-surgical treatments like Botox and dermal fillers are the primary growth drivers, with liposuction and breast augmentation leading surgical demand.

5. Greece — 6.33

Greece punches well above its weight in the cosmetic surgery world. High disposable incomes, a culture that places significant value on physical appearance, and a thriving medical tourism sector have all pushed Greece into the top five per capita. Rhinoplasty, liposuction, and breast augmentation are among the most commonly performed procedures, and Athens has established itself as a destination for patients from across the Balkans and the Middle East.

4. Colombia — 7.26

Colombia has built a global reputation for body contouring and aesthetic surgery, with Medellín and Bogotá emerging as world-class cosmetic surgery destinations. Liposuction, tummy tucks, and breast augmentations dominate the procedure list. The country's combination of highly trained surgeons, modern clinics, and prices far below those in the US or Europe has made it one of Latin America's top medical tourism markets, attracting patients from North America, Europe, and beyond.

3. Brazil — 7.62

Brazil leads the entire world in surgical cosmetic procedures, performing approximately 2.3 million operations in 2024. Its culture of body confidence and beauty is deeply embedded — Brazil performs more liposuctions and rhinoplasties than almost any other country and is first globally in eyelid surgeries. With around 6,497 plastic surgeons and a medical system that has made cosmetic procedures relatively accessible, Brazil has normalised aesthetic surgery across all income levels to a degree unmatched anywhere else on Earth.

2. Argentina — 8.81

Argentina is one of the most cosmetically active nations on the planet. Despite economic turbulence, demand for cosmetic procedures tripled between 2019 and 2021. Breast augmentation, liposuction, and rhinoplasty are perennial favourites. Argentina's cosmetic surgery culture is driven by a society that openly celebrates and discusses aesthetic procedures – there is minimal stigma, and surgery is often viewed as a form of self-care rather than vanity. Buenos Aires has long been considered the cosmetic surgery capital of Latin America.

1. South Korea — 8.9

South Korea is the undisputed plastic surgery capital of the world. With roughly 1 in 25 people having undergone a cosmetic procedure, it tops every per capita ranking on Earth. The industry is worth an estimated $1.8 billion and is deeply intertwined with K-beauty and K-pop culture, where flawless, carefully sculpted appearances are the norm. Double eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), rhinoplasty, and jawline contouring are the most popular procedures. Between 40 and 50% of South Korea's cosmetic surgery patients are medical tourists, drawn from across Asia and beyond. In South Korea, cosmetic surgery is not a secret – it is a graduation gift, a career investment, and, in many social circles, simply expected.
