A/R: Pentecost church elder arrested for galamsey supervision

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested a foreman linked to illegal mining activities at Akyem Morso near Juaso in the Asante Akim South District of the Ashanti Region.
The operation forms part of intensified efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to threaten water bodies and farmlands across Ghana.
NAIMOS officers carried out a coordinated enforcement exercise along the Kume River corridor, covering Morso, Kyekyebiase, and Bimma, where illegal mining activities were actively ongoing.
At Kyekyebiase, miners reportedly fled into nearby bushes upon sighting the task force, abandoning equipment at the site.
Equipment Destroyed and Seized
During the operation, NAIMOS dismantled and destroyed several illegal mining tools, including:
Eight chanfang machines
Four wooden gold washing platforms

The destruction was carried out through controlled burning as part of the enforcement action.
A further sweep of the area revealed excavator tracks leading into a nearby cocoa farm, where a Sany excavator had been concealed.
The machine was immobilised by the task force to prevent further illegal use.
Foreman Identified and Arrested
A man who initially claimed he was visiting his farm was later identified by intelligence officers as the foreman overseeing the illegal mining operations.
He was confirmed as David Bobie Peter, who admitted during interrogation that he was supervising a galamsey site at Morsu.
He further revealed that he had been sent by his employer, identified as Mr Appiah, to confirm whether NAIMOS officers were operating in the area.
The suspect also disclosed that he is an elder of The Church of Pentecost at Konongo, a detail that has drawn public attention to the case.

Environmental Damage Recorded
At the Morso site, NAIMOS officers discovered extensive environmental destruction, including:
Severe land degradation
Pollution of the Kume River
Diversion of the river to support mining operations
A second excavator found at the site was also immobilised.
David Bobie Peter has since been handed over to the Konongo District Police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
NAIMOS has warned individuals engaged in illegal mining to desist regardless of social or religious status.
The agency also called on traditional leaders and security agencies to intensify enforcement efforts in affected mining communities.
