Arsenal 4–0 Atletico: Gyökeres stars with first UCL goals

Arsenal delivered a statement performance in Europe as Viktor Gyökeres opened his Champions League account with a brilliant brace to seal a commanding 4–0 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Emirates Stadium.

From the first whistle, Mikel Arteta’s side was in control. Just four minutes in, Eberechi Eze’s deflected effort nearly caught Jan Oblak off guard, looping over the keeper only to clip the crossbar.

Declan Rice followed moments later with a dipping volley that narrowly cleared the target.

Atletico threatened briefly when David Raya’s clearance led to a quick throw-in, allowing Giuliano Simeone to feed Julian Alvarez, whose curling shot missed the open goal by inches.

Arsenal thought they had taken the lead in the 36th minute through Gabriel Martinelli, but his close-range finish was ruled out for offside. Alvarez then struck the bar again early in the second half — Atletico’s last real chance.

From there, the Gunners took total control. Gabriel Magalhães broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, rising to head home Rice’s pinpoint free kick. Seven minutes later, Martinelli doubled the advantage, calmly slotting in Myles Lewis-Skelly’s incisive through ball.

The night belonged to Gyökeres, though. The Swedish striker struck twice in quick succession — first turning sharply inside the box before seeing his shot deflect off David Hancko and beyond Oblak, then cleverly flicking in William Saliba’s headed pass with a deft hip finish.

Arsenal’s emphatic win not only extends their perfect Champions League run but also highlights their growing attacking depth, with Gyökeres’ debut goals marking a new chapter in Arteta’s evolving European campaign.
