Bibiani Gold Stars kicked off their GHALCA Top 4 campaign in style with a remarkable 2-1 comeback victory over Asante Kotoko in the opening fixture at the University of Ghana Stadium.
The match was fiercely contested, with momentum swinging between both sides. However, the Miners proved more clinical in front of goal, securing all three points in their debut clash of the competition.
Kotoko drew first blood just 16 minutes into the game when Albert Amoah coolly finished off a pass from captain Samba O’Neil. The lead, however, was short-lived.
Three minutes later, GoldStars orchestrated a brilliant attacking move that ended with O’Neil committing a foul inside the box.
Despite his reputation for saving penalties, Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was beaten by Samuel Atta Kumi, who confidently converted from the spot to level the score.
Both teams came out stronger after the break, with Kotoko showing more attacking intent, while GoldStars stayed resolute at the back.
The decisive moment arrived in the 62nd minute when a defensive mix-up between Henry Ansu and goalkeeper Camara gifted the Miners their second goal, putting them ahead for the first time.
Kotoko pressed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages but failed to break through GoldStars’ organised defence, as the game ended 2-1 in favour of the Bibiani side.
Looking ahead, Bibiani Gold Stars will aim for back-to-back wins when they face Hearts of Oak in their next match, while Asante Kotoko will battle Heart of Lions on Friday, August 22.
